"Legit Massage now $110" - have you seen that?

I was just talking to a legit massage provider and she was telling me that the government mandated that all licensed massage places have to charge $110 as of January 1st.

When I asked her if it was provincial or federal, she couldn't recall.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has come across this pricing?

Yeah, I call BS on that....no Government would be that stupid, not even sock boy could be that much of an idiot. I would believe he would put in a pleasure tax....don't give him that idea!!

Same here, while my regular legit place had upped their prices, it is still less than $110; I believe it was $100+tax last week for full hour of deep tissue.

Certain providers confuses "insurance approval" with "government mandate". I.e. just because Blue Cross (government insurance) will now reimburse up to $110 per hour does not mean that all providers MUST be charging $110 per hour.

Interesting explanation about pricing that you offer.

I am not sure why this provider feels that the "Government" is mandating what a "private" industry can charge for doing their business.

I don't believe (from my understanding), that the massage industry is government regulated like health care.

You can go to a doctor who bills Alberta Health Care (for his entire fee), likewise there are doctors that may choose to bill extra (on top of AHC), as they provide "exemplary service".

I was told by a practising physician that going forward don't count on finding a good doctor unless you're willing to pay for it. (but that's another subject for a different thread !).

PS: Is Alberta Blue Cross a government body (I don't believe so). They just use the name "Alberta" as part of their name?

AFAIK, Canadian doctors cannot bill more than what is allowed by the provincial health authorities UNLESS the individual doctor completely opt out of the ALL government funded services. I have had many discussions with my physician about this. His buddy, a cosmetic surgeon, had opted out and is making millions (instead of hundreds of thousands).

Also, AFAIK, Alberta Blue Cross is a non-profit which was brought into existence through provincial legislation. While they provide "for profit" insurance to normal Albertans, they also run the "non-profit" or "guaranteed" insurance for seniors and low income Albertans. It is an unique organization which competes openly with for-profit insurance companies but uses profits to subsidize its non-profit ventures. I don't particularly like the mixed use concept but it is what it is. As everything they do is heavily influenced by the government, many people simply call them a government body.

As far as governments "telling" private companies what they must charge for goods and services; the City of Edmonton has done just that- all take-out restaurants MUST charge $ for single-use items! All this with no accountability, no collection of the fee and no direction for the fee- just padding the bottom line of the business. Funny thing is? Not one business protested, refused or complained! I would think a savvy business looking for customers would tack on a "rebate" on every bill giving this money back to the customer.

Interesting...I know people that are on the hunt for a new doctor, and it's surprising how many doctors they found are putting on the "I'm a Cosmetic doctor" hat, and might be a General P 1-2 days of the week, while the rest of the week they are practising "cosmetic procedures".

A tidbit I heard from a doctor...it's now looked "down upon" in certain cultures if you come out of medical school and only want to be a GP vs a person who comes out and then goes into a specialty. The specialist will of course make more money vs the GP, and it totally looks like $$$ is the influence of todays up and coming doctors.

Yes, a lot of people think of it as a "government body", but in reality its a "for profit" institution.

It's one thing for them to say what MP they will reimburse, but another for them to actually dictate a price...(eg. a Dentist can charge you $200 for an exam but Blue Cross will only reimburse you $150 based on their pricing). The dentist will charge what they want!

That is BS, I have been at two legit place this year both were $90, for one hour. One went on for an hour and 15 so I left a $20 cash tip. My private plan caps reimbursement at $100 per hour.

Yes, total nonsense. However there is a maximum rate (Alberta government may have a guidance) that insurance companies refer to as an upper limit to pay claims. Meaning if that rate is exceeded client has to pay more from out of own pocket. If I remember correctly it is quite generous but then there are expert therapists such as osteopathic massage specialists etc who may charge at that high end. For deep tissue massages 1 hr with receipts I have recently paid a total of $105 and $90. Guess which one was superior? The $90 one. The therapist was outstanding and easily did 30%-40% more work. RMT designations, lots of unevennesses

the government also has a recommended fee structure for dentists. Dentists are able to bill whatever they want but most use the recommended fee structure.

I just can't see them ever doing that for massage.

Definitely BS. Tell her that the government has mandated that you only visit massage therapists that charge a reasonable amount and you won't be seeing her anymore.

There are all kinds of rate structures and suggested rates. If you are paying from a Health Spending Account the insurance company only cares that it is a legit RMT. But if the coverage is through another health plan you can get the limits information from the insurer.

Organizations like CRMTA have their own recommended rates. For 1 hour it is $105, before any taxes.

As for high end spa rates there is no upper limit as long as it is paid out of your own pockets. How about those spa getaways near Scottsdale for over $10K per day? 90 minutes massage per day included . Glasses of fresh detox wheatgrass juice before and after.

Some people want to drive a lexis, some want to drive a VW. People who can pay more, often will just for the feeling of exclusiveness. I doubt the massage is any more relaxing than your local legit RMT or our favorite semi-legit (who I find actually are better at pampering me) So fill your boots if you think a heated bench to sit on while staring at a wall of plants while sipping cucumber water, is worth and extra $45. I certainly wont TOFTT here. I would bet my $80+ tip at the best semi-legit will leave me in a deeper state of Bliss than this upscale place.

On the website it's 2200 hrs listed. That is not good enough if you are Sunlife anyways so even though 100% legit you are still out of pocket due to not being 3000 hrs minimum

Sadly much of the Canadian training programs for RMTs are like most of the other pretend - training programs for many other types of careers. Lacking anything to do with real practical proficiency. Example .. lessons and exams on cellular structure, organelles etc.. total no value. Money maker for the schools. True apprentice programs do not happen in this country. Mostly useless head knowledge that is forgotten before they finish the program.
