A&P textbook

[UNEQUINTY]

I am sure there are lots of them around, but can anyone recommend any specific book? I don't feel that the subject has been covered in enough depth in the course I'm doing, and as the course manual has been put together by the school I can't be sure of their source for the A&P stuff. I'm doing an AQA Diploma in Reflexology. I can't think that the A&P would be much different for people doing say ITEC, so all input would be gratefully received.

these are ones I have used :

An introductory guide to Anatomy and Physiology - Louise Tucker - ITEC approved text

Anatomy and Physiologyf or holistic therapists - Francesca Gould - VTCT text - fairly basic , not a huge ammount of dteail but I found it very useful to read at the start of each system to get a good overview before going into detail. - also has lots of tips on good ways to remember things - such as the layers of the epidermis etc.

Anatomy and Physiology in health and illness - Anne Waugh and Allison grant- starting to get more detailed

the Anatomy colouring book and the physiology colouring book - American terms in some places but good clear explanations and of course diagrams.


Human anatomy and Physiology - Elaine marieb - if it's not in here it's not worth knowing - very very detailed ( and expensive ) I got mine a present .

Thank you both of you! Janey, I see you are just down the road from me, I'm in Egham. What are your therapies?

Gonna go and buy some felt tips now, this colouring in lark sounds like loads of fun. I'm going on a 10 hour flight tomorrow so perhaps if I ask the crew nicely they'll giving me one of those kiddies colouring in packs to keep me quiet!

I also used The Daily Telegraphs 'The Family Encyclopaedia of Medicine and Health' and found the Ross and Wilson already mentioned really good. 'The Human Body' by Dr Tony Smith (DK) is great for pictures.

As for finding them cheaper, you could try some of the second hand bookshops but I never found good texts books there. How about ebay?

Yes, I found Ross & Wilson, Anatomy & Physiology excellent. Although it went into too much detail for ITEC, I really found it was really clear, and helped me to understand A&P and put things into context.

I have a huge library of books & this was the ONE I kept going back to.

I think it depends where you study. I was taught by a man who taught A&P at college to A Level students as well as us lot (he preferred us of course!) He was a fountain of knowledge, there wasn't much he didn't know - about all sorts! Bless.

He taught us to a very indepth level, which I am glad about, but I think in a way he made it harder for us. I have just studied at another college and their approach to the subject seems to be much lighter, skirting over stuff.

Personally I need to understand things fully to really get to grips with it, so I probably made it harder for myself right?

We really did work hard at the a and p stuff, in fact we had to do it twice, only could do the massage after we had done that first and then repeating it again, so I had to do two exams in it.

I don't think the Helen McGuiness books go into enough detail, but I know plenty of people who have used them and passed no problem. I think it is down to individual taste and how deep you want to go into the subject.

I totally agree with Candie. I have to go into things in great depth to understand them. I found that my ITEC tutor really wanted to keep things at the simplest level and she was right for our particular AP&M exam, we were asked only a few AP&M questions and they were mainly on the reproductive system!

To be brutally honest I was quite dismayed with ITEC after the exam; all those students who didn't do a bean of work all year could have easily passed with Disticition.

At the end of the day however, I learned tonnes from studying hard and I believe that having a thorough understanding of A&P makes for a better therapist.

I agree with Candie and Angelfish too. We also went into the A and P in great depth and used the Ross and Wilson as our text book. I thought the actual ITEC exam skirted over a lot of it and seemed to concentrate more on massage and massage techniques. I am glad to have covered it in more depth though and still feel I am learning all the time.

The original Anatomy Colouring Book is excellent & they do a physiology version too, although it can get a bit messy on the colouring front.

Tortora is probably the king of A&P books, but maybe more than you need.

The small Oxford Phys book is also a peach.
