Advice on Approaching Places for Massage

Hi all!   My family and I successfully made the move to Vermont.  Now its just getting the wee ones transitioned to preschool and finding a house (oh, and getting used to the cost of living here... sheesh!).   I've only previously worked in three massage offices (two small Colorado towns) and kind of fell into those positions.  I am in a much larger city now and am looking for suggestions as to how I should approach businesses re massage (whether they offer the service, whether they are looking for additional therapists, possible rental space etc.).    For some reason I am feeling intimidated with this task (maybe its the new location thing that's got me rattled).Any help is most appreciated!Gayle

First of all, Congrats on the move! I have personally never been in this situation, but this is what I can suggest.  Call around to places and ask what they offer.  If they offer massage, ask if you could drop off or fax your resume.  Check out to see if there are any local massage schools and see if you can get employment information there.  Sometimes this can be hard since the schools seem to only want to give the job information to graduates, but it is worth a try.  As for a rental space you could drive around and see what has signs or contact a realtor.I am sure once you get familiar with the new area, you'll be fine.

Are you a member of AMTA?  Maybe you could also get in touch with the local chapter and attend a meeting or two and begin networking.  If the meeting isn't going to be soon, maybe you can ask a few people for some help.  Good that you have your resume.  You have experience.  YOu have education.  JUST GO FOR IT!!  All they can say is No.....and you've lost nothing.  We are so lucky to have so many options of places to work.  So, perhaps the first offer may not be from the ideal type of environment, but it might work til you get more settled.  Chiros, hospitals, spas, gyms, holistic centers.......go for it!

Be sure to keep an eye on this local site: http://burlington.craigslist.org/off/ I agree with the others, get on that fax machine and start sending that resume out. You can also post your resume on the same site here: http://burlington.craigslist.org/res/Tap into the different holistic centers in your area - talk to the receptionist at the yoga center or the manager of the little herbal shop/health food store. I also agree with the others about going to the schools. Often times people are looking to add someone to their practice and they post a "help wanted" at these spots. It could be a great source for you. These should be public bulletin boards, maybe call before you drop in to see if they have a bulletin board. You don't need to tell them you're looking for a position unless they ask.

 Gayle,    I know being in a new place shakes things up a bit.      I would call first and schedule an appointment with the owner of where you desire to work.  Think types of places where you would like to work or 'set up shop'.    Since you are in a larger city, there are more opportunities to practice massage therapy.   You have a service to offer, think of how you want to apply your skill of mt to the public.  Contact these places and offer your service, they can only stand to win, right?

Thanks to all who sent PMs!   I'm putting this job opportunity out to my learned colleagues for your opinion (you erudite souls!).There is a job opening at an osteopath's office for MT that pays $15/hr (they offer 30 min pre-adjustment sessions for patients).   MT gets paid the hourly rate no matter if there is a session or not.   Not sure how long the shift lasts.   Now I know this is low pay compared to most situations, but do you think it would be a good way to get introduced to the community?  Oh, they also offer a free health club membership (which I don't need).   All your thoughts are so very appreciated!!!!

I think the ostopath. office is a decent way to get started. I did the same thing with a chiro. office right out of school. That was a year ago and now I'm ready to move on. I'm getting $12 hourly and starting to resent the low pay. The chiro doesn't actually promote my service very well either. He says to patients "Hey Joe, how about a shoulder rub today...Don't worry about the insurance coverage, it's my treat." Did the Osteopath say that you can promote yourself to build a clientel outside of the office? Over the past year I've gotten 2 regular clients and about 3-4 one timers. Not really worth it...I've found that most people going to a chiro/osteopath like that its covered by med. insurance or workers comp or auto insurance. They don't really want to pay out spa massage prices.But the good thing is that I met lots of local people. I was new to this area right out of school and didn't know anyone.Good luck :-*
