Bars in Phuket Town ?

Hi Guys, Have just moved to Phuket town (from Rayong) for my work. Are there any falang-friendly bars in Phuket town, preferably with a decent pool table, or do I have to travel to Chalong or Patong every evening ? If there are some bars n the town, please give me a clear location, because I have only been here 4 days and don't know anywhere yet ! Thanks in advance, Mike C

Nightlife in Phuket town is low key, and mostly Thai focused. There are a few farang oriented places, but you would probably be made welcome almost everywhere. You won't find girly bars; Patong and other places more frequented by tourists are where to go if they are your style.

Roxy's on Phang Nga Road more or less opposite the On On hotel is popular with the young English teacher set. It has a pool table, and shows football, and can get a bit lively. I gather the odd TG who may be interested in a farang boyfriend can be found there. They are not P4P freelancers, just regular gals having an evening out.

Michael's on Takua Pa Road, near the intersection with Rassada Road attracts an older bunch of mainly mainly expat regulars. It is seldom very busy, but ok if you click with whoever is there. Again, they have a pool table and show sport.

Rockin' Angels on Yaowarat Road near the intersection with Talang Road has a couple of resident musicians. They welcome others to join in (just ask) from about 9.30 - midnight each day. They play mainly blues and rock. No pool or sport on TV. It attracts a mix of ages who include Thais, expats and backpackers..... with even the odd superstar having a break in Phuket discretely poppping in to jam.

A number of other places near Rockin' Angels are popular with young Thais, and would be foreigner friendly for sure.

There is an Irish style pub on Montri Road, near Seng Ho book shop. It has a backpacker lodging upstairs. It is a pleasant enough place, but poorly located and has never gained traction. They have a pool table, and also show sport.

Timber Hut, on Yaowarat Road, a bit north of Dibuk Road is a long established music venue popular with locals, and a few foreigners.

Hi Player, Thnx 4 your quick reply - could not answer earlier as Internet in my place VERY unreliable at the moment ! Thanks very much for your brief Intro to the Town nightlife - very userful. Had a drive around the town, late in the afternoon, but it seems that O'Malleys and Michaels Bar are now permanently closed ! Could not find 'Fever' either, maybe it's also gone? I will look around tonight for Timber Hut and Roxys - maybe I will get lucky ! Mike C

Was out in Phuket Town this evening.

Michael's was open, but I didn't look in, so I don't know how busy it was. I think they only open in the evenings.

Roxy's had a few customers, but it looked like a quiet evening there.

O'Malley's had reasonable crowd, which was good to see. Down the road at a place called PJ Tour & Guesthouse they looked reasonably busy too. They have pool and sport on TV.

Rockin' Angels was busy, with the owner, Patrick (50 something, from Singapore), on guitar and vocals, his Thai wife's teenage niece (from Phuket) on bass and vocals; they are the regulars. There was a 40 something Aussie drummer for an hour, then a 30 something guy (maybe American) took over. A 20 something English guy got up to sing several songs. The customer age demographic reflected that of the band, about a third Thai, two thirds expat and travelers, and about 50/50 male/female.

I noticed the odd farang face at quite a few other places around town, some of which were quite busy.

I can't recall a place called "Fever". The places I mentioned have all been around for a few years, except for the PJ Tour, which I have only noticed recently. "Fever" could be one a number of places which are aimed at the young Thai set, which tend to open and close or change names quite frequently.

A pleasant evening can be had in Phuket town, albeit not too different from what you might find in a moderately sized town in many other parts of the world. In addition there are the Thai type places, with pretty girl warblers and hostesses.

Hi Player and Falkis, Thanks again for your advice. Went into O'Malleys last night for a short while, and found their Pool table also quite good. The owner (Chloe ?) very friendly. Bar was damned hot, and even though there are a bunch of fans nobody bothered to plug them in or turn them on !!! Still, I will go back there as nice crowd of people. Will also try Roxy's and will look for "PJ Tour and Guesthouse". Can you give me a clue as to the location of PJ Tour ? TIA, MikeC

Phuket PJ Tour and Guesthouse is on the opposite side of the road from O'Malleys, about 70 metres past the lights at the Seng Ho intersection, on the way to the Post Office. It is opposite Montree Hotel.

You hardly notice PJ in the day time, unless you are looking up at the signs. At night, when it is lit up, with a few people around it is more obvious.

Roxy's is not directly opposite the On On; it is about 100 metres down the road. It has mainly blue lighting. There is what seems like a young Thai cocktail place next door.
