I love to barter! I have bartered for everything from baby sitting to concrete work to web design. I have had awesome experiences, and some where I was completely taken advaneforum.xxxe of.

What was the most amazing thing you have bartered for?

Have you ever had a "Barter gone bad" situation?

Barter experiences

Best barter situation: personal training. Love it!! Other bartering that has worked out well: web design, facials, handyman work, house painting, artwork... I know there's more, but I'm drawing a blank on the rest.

The only situation that didn't work out was office cleaning. I had even tried it with a few different people, but apparently it just wasn't meant to be.

Barter experiences

Just keep in mind that bartering is considered taxable income.

We've had a few unusual bartering situations. Once (not this business), Hubby traded some printer ink for a pair of shoes, that didn't hold up well at all. That was when we decided that when and if we ever bartered again, it would be only for something we'd be out to buy anyway. That has helped us with this business- although there has still been quite a bit of bartering we've done over the past several months!

A few recently-bartered-for services/items: piano lessons for myself and two of our daughters, logo embroidery and new scrubs for Hubby and myself, and computer repair work, including a "new" (refurbished) desktop for the office, and a stained-glass piece depicting our logo: that got finished and brought to us yesterday, and it ROCKS!!!- literally; our logo depicts a hot stone massage, and she found some three-dimensional rocks to use for the stones! No, we would not have sought out that stained-glass logo otherwise, but this was a special situation (a dear friend of mine absolutely can't afford the maintenance sessions she very much needs, so I was giving them to her uncharged anyway. Since she was taking the stained-glass class, and I remarked that a piece with our logo in it would be "cool", she decided to do one for us in thanks for the massages. And yes, it's getting reported on our end.).

Barter experiences

My best barter was when I did my yoga teacher training.

I had always wanted to do a training, but never found one close by or with a schedule that worked for me. Ironically, I found my teacher while I was in massage school 2 weeks before her training classes started. The schedule was perfect, but everyone told me I was nuts to consider it while still in school. And registered yoga teacher training is not cheap, it averages about $2000. But I contacted her thinking maybe I'd do it the next time around and must have mentioned that I taught bellydancing. She then offered to give me a discount on the training if I gave her some private bellydance lessons because she had always wanted to try it but was too nervous to go to a class.

I think it was one of those 'when the students ready, the teacher shall appear' type things. I ended up finishing the training the same month that I got my massage license, so it was nice to not have to finish one training and start another!

I've also done a few barters on etsy.com, a website sort of like ebay only its just for handmade items. I was eyeballing this mineral make up one girl made and she liked one of the ornaments that I had made so we did a swap. It was nice!

I've bartered with a salon owner, I gave her a massage and she gave me some aveda products.

I can't think of any 'bad' barters, none that are horrid enough to tell about anyways.

Barter experiences

I use to trade massage for a hair color weave, oh my I miss that, my hair always looked great.
Now I can't find anyone who does nearly as good work for trade or cash.

Barter experiences

Yes, any barter is considered taxable income. It is best to keep detailed records just in case you ever get audited. Typically you barter dollar for dollar, so it evens out. The correct form to use is usually 1099-b.

****WARNING***** SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION TO FOLLOW*********

I am working on a barter network specifically for massage therapist and other natural heath practitioners. You will be able to barter for advertising, products, and CEU's. Or you could barter for painting, limo services, charter fishing trips, or ski lift tickets. The official launch is not until June, and my site is not completely functioning just yet, but if you are curious, you can check it out.

Since it is not complete,if you have any suggestions or ideas on what I can do to make it better, I would really appreciate the input. Or if you have companies or products or presenters that you think would be beneficial, I'd love to hear it.

KneadfulThings' TradeJa site is up and running. http://tradeja.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=48&Itemid=55

I was wondering if anyone from the forum has used the site yet, and if so, what you thought of it.

I miss KneadfulThings, and especially hope she'll come back and tell us more about the site and an update on her Certified Business & LifeCoach business. I recently had a client who is a life coach, and it sounds most interesting. Of course, that would be for another thread.

Where are you, KneadfulThings? :smt006

I love barter, and do it whenever I can! When I had my cabinet shop I did a lot more, for everything from Tattoos to televisions! I'm just putting a barter together for a new Logo for when I graduate from school, seems like a good first massage barter. Oh, actually I have been doing trades with other LMT's for massage since I've started school too. It feels a little unbalanced to me since they have years of experience, and I am just starting and need to do free massages anyway, but they feel that it is fair, and I learn a lot, and it's another reason that I love my awesome community!

This sounds like an awesome lifestyle that I could easily feel comfortable with because I love going from place to place and not being tied down anywhere. (for those who believe in past lives, I'm more than certain I've had a few Romani/Gypsy/other nomadic experiences). However, just traveling around trading massages for a place to stay, I think I'd fear a bit for my safety.pueppi wrote:A side note post regarding bartering. I enjoy bartering also! I've bartered for: * My website (found the designer on Craigslist looking to trade services with an mt)* Social media marketing services- initially he was a paying client but after a time, he asked if I was interested in bartering. * Personal training services- discovered this one when I went around and introduced myself to local gyms. The only thing I've bartered and not had a good experience is (interestingly enough) with other mt's. One of my close friends owns a tattoo shop. I've bartered for tattoos, piercings and body jewelry. I've also bartered for professional photos for my website. When I get my new office (yes I'm moving), I plan on bartering with a contractor for work on the new place.

Barter experiences

The only thing I've bartered for is professional photos, definitely a great exchange!

Kat

Barter experiences

One of my close friends owns a tattoo shop. I've bartered for tattoos, piercings and body jewelry. I've also bartered for professional photos for my website. When I get my new office (yes I'm moving), I plan on bartering with a contractor for work on the new place.

A side note post regarding bartering. I didn't know where else to put this:

German Grandmother Lives Money-free and Has Never Been Happier
In 1996, Heidemarie Schwermer, a former schoolteacher and psychotherapist, decided to try to live without money for a year as an experiment.

Two years before she began living completely without money, Schwermer had opened a swap shop where people could barter services and goods. It was such a success it gave her the confidence to take the leap of quitting her job, giving away all of her possessions except what could fit into a single suitcase and backpack, and moving out of her rental home. According to the Austrian Times, Schwermer says she "had become irritated by the greedy consumer society" she was witnessing.

Schwermer lived nomadically, trading gardening, cleaning, and even therapy sessions for food and a place to sleep.

Schwermer has written three books about her experiences.

Yes, any barter is considered taxable income. It is best to keep detailed records just in case you ever get audited. Typically you barter dollar for dollar, so it evens out. I ended up finishing the training the same month that I got my massage license, so it was nice to not have to finish one training and start another!I've also done a few barters on etsy.com, a website sort of like ebay only its just for handmade items. I was eyeballing this mineral make up one girl made and she liked one of the ornaments that I had made so we did a swap. It was nice!I've bartered with a salon owner, I gave her a massage and she gave me some aveda products.I can't think of any 'bad' barters, none that are horrid enough to tell about anyways.

That has helped us with this business- although there has still been quite a bit of bartering we've done over the past several months!A few recently-bartered-for services/items: piano lessons for myself and two of our daughters, logo embroidery and new scrubs for Hubby and myself, and computer repair work, including a "new" (refurbished) desktop for the office, and a stained-glass piece depicting our logo: that got finished and brought to us yesterday, and it ROCKS!!!- literally; our logo depicts a hot stone massage, and she found some three-dimensional rocks to use for the stones!

I enjoy bartering also! I've bartered for:

* My website (found the designer on Craigslist looking to trade services with an mt)

* Social media marketing services- initially he was a paying client but after a time, he asked if I was interested in bartering.

* Personal training services- discovered this one when I went around and introduced myself to local gyms.

The only thing I've bartered and not had a good experience is (interestingly enough) with other mt's. I've had a trade mt cancel on me at the last minute for a paying client, no show and/or their work was inconsistent.

Sadly, I have experienced this as well. I don't do much barter but when I do I explain to my potential trade partner that I treat all appts as if they are paying cuz in a sense a trade is still paying (we're both getting something of value for our time) and I expect to be treated that way as well.

This sounds like an awesome lifestyle that I could easily feel comfortable with because I love going from place to place and not being tied down anywhere. (for those who believe in past lives, I'm more than certain I've had a few Romani/Gypsy/other nomadic experiences). However, just traveling around trading massages for a place to stay, I think I'd fear a bit for my safety.

Yes, any barter is considered taxable income. It is best to keep detailed records just in case you ever get audited. Typically you barter dollar for dollar, so it evens out. The correct form to use is usually 1099-b.Here is a link to learn more:http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/art ... 95,00.html****WARNING***** SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION TO FOLLOW********* I am working on a barter network specifically for massage therapist and other natural heath practitioners.

I love barter, and do it whenever I can! When I had my cabinet shop I did a lot more, for everything from Tattoos to televisions! I'm just putting a barter together for a new Logo for when I graduate from school, seems like a good first massage barter. Oh, actually I have been doing trades with other LMT's for massage since I've started school too. It feels a little unbalanced to me since they have years of experience, and I am just starting and need to do free massages anyway, but they feel that it is fair, and I learn a lot, and it's another reason that I love my awesome community!
