I recently decided to add hot stone massage to my services.  I was planning on charging $10 more for it as an add-on with my regular deep tissue massage.  I also want to offer a seperate massage that would be a basic hot stone massage protocal.  This would also be $10 more than my regular rate.Most of the regulars that I have are on my maintenance plans where I give them $5 to $10 off their massage depending on their regular frequency of massage.I was trying to decide if I would charge $10, $5 or add usage of hot stones on for free for the clients on the maintenance plans.  For now I am giving them all a trial with the hot stones for free so they can experience them.  It does take time to set-up and clean up, plus the added knowledge to use them.  But, my maintenance plans are what keep my business going and I thought this would be a nice bonus for taking regular care of themselves.  But, then again so is $5-$10 off the massage price that they already get!What do you all think?

When I took the class they suggested that we do an hour and a half session, because it takes more time to set up and deal with the stones during the massage.  My boss charges $115 for 1 1/2 hours, and $165 for a hot stone massage.  So, definitely charge more for that service!  Plus purchasing the set up is costly, you want to be able to make that back in a reasonable amount of time!

I do something similar to you with your Maintenance Plans.  IMO, I wouldn't add the stones in for free.  I think giving everyone a teaser to know what it feels like was a great idea but I would let everyone know that this service is available in addition to the plan.  In other words, if they want to have a hot stone session rather than a regular session they would pay you an additional fee that day when they came in for their session.  As you said, it is extra time to set up and tear down as well as the knowledge in doing the technique.  I agree with the others that you are low balling yourself with regard to what you are charging for the hot stone service.

Wow,  I thought I was being competitive.I had looked into the Hot Stone massage charges in the area, but it is hard to find information.  One spa offered it for $115 for 80 mins. (I know this person was trained in La-Stone)  The other was 1 hour for $65. (I know this therapist has no extra training to do stone)  Not much to go off of.  I was seeing a therapist that used the stones as her tools and she didn't charge anything extra. I am still not sure.  I will have to find more information about other areas nearby and their charges.  I am close to 2 other states (DE and PA).I am not sure that the clients I currently have would pay $90-$100 for an hour of stone massage or more than $10 to add it to the regular session.  They have all liked the stones incorporated into the deep sessions (trial), but I am not sure how much they would be willing to pay to have them added in.  I also like using them, so there is an added bonus for me.  I would need to add time to the massage also to be able to continue to accomplish my goals for the deep work and add the stones.  I feel rushed sometimes as is.So much to think about.  If anyone has anything to add, please feel free.Thank you all!

I do two types of stone massage. Stones added to your massage are $10.00 dollars more. That gets you a FBSW plus stones glided to back, legs and arms, supine & prone. Other therapists in my area charge this also. The other stone massage I do is called "THe Ultimate heated Stone" and they lay on stones{covered by a pillow case} and stones are held on hands/feet between toes, under knees, etc....... That is 100 min. for $115.00

I charge only $15 extra for stones.  Most people in the area charge at least $20 extra.  Stones are a lot of work....setting up and cleaning up.  I, personally, don't really like working with them that much.  I don't really push it with my clients, and so I haven't gotten a lot of requests, which is just fine by me.  If you find that working with the stones is a benefit for you because it helps heal your hands and also gives them a rest from other deep tissue work, then you will want to do whatever works for you to encourage more clients to book stone massage.  But, if additional income is your goal, then, at the end of the day when you look at total amount of time spent and your income, you aren't going to be making as much per hour as if you had not done the stones.  I do Ashiatsu (barefoot massage) and I generally charge more for it.  But, if I have a client who has not booked an Ashi session and my hands are getting tired or I feel I'll be more effective if I work with my feet, I will work with my feet and not charge any more for it because I'm doing it as much for me as I am for them.

I don't do hot stone therapy but I do (or used to) offer paraffin spa dip for elbows/hands/feet as an addition if someone wants it for $5 per area. Occasionally, I'll offer a package where I'll throw it in for free at the end.Be well,Jen
