Door question...with lots of pics.

My practice is located in a shared suite. When you enter the suite there's a nice lobby area then a long hall of offices. When you first do down the hall there's a small hallway to the left. That hallway is my practice and it consists of 2 rooms, an office/waiting room and the massage room. Right now all I have separating my practice from the rest of the suite is a thick set of curtains.

I have a client who is a carpenter and he's going to install a door at the entrance of my hallway for me...we're trading all materials and labor for massage!!!

My question is should I install a solid door or a glass door? The cost difference is $200 to go with the glass door, which is 3 1 hour massages. My thoughts were that new people would be confused to see a wooden door. They would probably think that the treatment room is on the other side of the door and they wouldn't enter. If the door was see-through then they would be able to see the hall and the rooms from outside of my "suite within a suite".

My lease is up at the end of March so at first I was thinking that I shouldn't put too much into the door because I might be leaving. But, I love the area I'm in and there isn't much available for lease so I might be there longer than then end of March while I'm waiting for something else to come available.

Great space! I would go for the solid wood door and put up a sign that indicates they are entering the waiting area or office or something "Bodytemple Waiting Room" or "Bodytemple Suite" or something. Also, a solid wood door (as opposed to hollow) will keep more sound out if that is a concern for you at all.

If you know you're going to stay you can always upgrade to a glass door later, with the frame already there you'd only have to hang the door, which I imagine would be easier than what you're going through now.

I think if you are bartering, it makes all the sense in the world to go with the glass door. That will make your practice look more professional, by the way you describe it and the pictures. And, it's only time out of your day. Since you are new in practice, you probably have a little spare time. Plus, if you do end up staying at this place, you don't have to *wish* you had put in the glass door when you had a chance.

Will you be able to get a door for your room too?

As a side note, I really love the way you left the face cradle cover together at the middle part, for the picture. It really makes the picture look clean. And, you have a nice looking set of sheets on the table that looks to fit your personality.


*chuckles as I see shiva shiva wrote something while I did, and we have the absolutely different opinions* Ah, well... that's what you get when you put it out there.

PS: can you describe in this thread how you did that face cradle cover. It doesn't quite fit anything I've seen before with the bottom of the pillowcase covering the cradle as it does, and the pleats look to be a little differently folded to make that work. This is what I am familiar with:

To address what you asked pueppi:

I did groupon at the end of last month so I'm usually booked Mon-Sat but I'm gonna take off the Sat that my guy is going to install the door. He says it's a 6 hour job!!! :shock:

The pillow case. This is how I learned how to do it in school and I never strayed from it. It works great!

I might have to make a video but let's see if I can explain it. You're going to make 2 lines in the pillow case. Hold the pillow case by the ends...long ways. Bring the bottom towards the top and then bring the rest to the bottom. The pillow case should have 2 folds. You should have one long piece. Take the 2 ends and bring them down to make the "house" like in the pic you posted. Set the "house" on the face cradle and fold the loose ends over the cradle.

I understand that this makes zero sense what so ever lol. I can totally make a video one day if that helps anyone.

How to fold a pillow case to cover the face cradle:

Lay the pillow case flat

Fold once up then once down

Fold one end down

Fold the other end down

Now you have a "house" shape. Lay the "house" on the face cradle and fold the top free fabric over the face cradle!

Funny, I know how to make the house, (but not in "z" formation / that is what you are showing, right? it is folded like a "z" in the initial long folds?) and I never thought about opening it up to fold the top free fabric over the face cradle. Very nice little bonus there. Thank you!

I personally like the idea of a glass door also. I like to see what is going on and you can always hang a sheer.

I've seen offices with wood doors that have glass panels, either within the door or to the side. Maybe that's an option so people can still see in and know it's not the treatment room but you still have more of a sound barrier?

hehe, two totally different opinions!

I agree that the glass door would be best, but knowing how it feels to not be sure if you're going to stay or not I would also err on the side of caution. $200 is $200, trade or not, esp. if she's full 6 days a week. I'd be sad to invest that and then leave in 3-6 mo.

Is there any way you could get your landlord to pay for the upgrade? Since it's an improvement on the building that would probably benefit anyone else who would use it in the future?

And thanks for taking the time to post pics! I love having new ways to fold the sheets.

That's actually another interesting idea. You might be able to get away with a bathroom width solid door and small glass panels outside of the door frame. I think that may depend on your building code though (if you have ADA compliance issues or not).
