"Energy work" or MT-client connection or... not su

I was previously registered as infinityplusone here, but lost my password then had my account locked(?) because I tried to log in too many times w/ incorrect passwords, so I just signed up with a new screen name. Anyways... that was just for anyone that wants to read my past posts to see that I am not a troll.


Anyways, I have a question for the MTs, specifically the MTs that do energy work.

I received a chair massage (in an airport spa) about a month ago and the massage itself was good, not awesome or anything just good. But during the massage I felt, I don't know... a "connection" with the MT. I was not physically attracted to the the MT (she was female, I am male), but I sort of felt like I could have sat down with the MT and we could have started talking and we could have become very good friends. (I am aware of client-practitioner transference in the counseling / psych setting but do not think it was that). After the massage I felt very centered, calm, aware and intuitive. I use to be very intuitive (I use to call it "other aware") when I was younger, Although I find I am not so much now since I seem to have so much work related stress crowding my mind.

I have had many massages now (since my previous postings) and I have never felt that way before, even though I have had many very awesome massages. I have several local MTs that I see on a semi-regular basis that I think are great people who I think would make great friends. But I am not friends with any of them, other then our professional relationship. I am just saying they are nice people, but I have never had that "connected" feeling and all the other feelings.

So I guess my question is, "What was that exactly?"

At first I thought maybe she had done some energy work on me. As I am not familiar with energy work or what it feels like, so in my ignorance chalked it up to that. And other then that or the transference, which I really do not think it is I am not sure what it could have been.
This is not something that is consuming me or that I think about all the time since it happened, but I am curious.

I am interested in your thoughts. Thanks.

It might be that her intention was so keenly focused on helping you that you actually tuned into that intention. It is a very powerful sensation when you are able to acknowledge it within your physical self as coming from another who is caring for you in whatever manner.

Also, from my having to acknowledge my own "other awareness", you may have been intuitively picking up on the personality of the lmt who was providing your massage services that particular day. That too can lead to a very big sense of ... " I sort of felt like I could have sat down with the MT and we could have started talking and we could have become very good friends. " When you are a "sensitive" that can happen quite easily - especially when you are relaxing and releasing stresses you usually carry with you like.

At least that's my take on what you were experiencing. Maybe some of the others on the board can help you out better with this than I have.

I wouldn't jump the the idea of energy work, but it is very possible. I practice Reiki as well as Craniosacral Therapy and for ethical as well as boundary issues I do not do energy work on clients without asking for their permission first. Most therapists are required to ask before performing modalities like that.
Maybe she just seemed to be a very open, nurturing person. That, more than anything can draw people to each other. Plus, we have an innate sense of chemistry, so you could have been able to tell you could have been friends with her in different circumstances.

you probably feel like that because your body open up and then trigger certain emotions which indirectly connect to her because she was touching you during the massage. not to mention that you can do that with anyone. it also depends on the person's energy and their intent. whatever energy you create you attract. it's possible she had intent of massaging a friend. most good therapist do that to gain rapport from body to do good work. they usually are grounded open book person. not everyone have that skill. the body is a different language and it's important for body to trust us. massage is a basically another language of communication and that is why not everyone is cut out to be one because of their lack of skill in emotional states known as EQ.

Nothing wrong with feeling something like that. The important thing is to remember when your in a situation like that, she is the therapist. Sort of like when you find a teacher you like. They are the teacher, you the student. Nice to like them. Nice to want to be friends with them. Doesn't mean it's the right thing to persue.

Well almost a year after I posted the above, I am back for a visit.

Thank you all for your replies, they were very insightful and helpful!! I have had a massage about once every other month since the referred to massage and have not had a similar occurrence happen. But have had several great massages.


As for me pursuing something or even why that was referred to I am not sure. But as she was in an airport location an hour plus from my house and I have not been back to that location for a massage since that massage nor have I noticed her when walking by that place on my way to or from a plane, there is no worries about me pursuing anything... except someday perhaps another good massage.

I think it is beneficial to not always assume that a client has some nefarious motive when asking questions concerning massage.

Fair enough... I did ask for MT's thoughts. I guess I have to remember that some MTs here are coming from a certain perspective.As for the use of "nefarious", yes it is the word that I used. The "assuming" you did all on your own though.
