I never thought I would say it...I'm considering opening another clinic or relocating to a larger location. It won't happen anytime soon (more just thinking down the road), but for anyone that has ever gone through this transition or has any experience...do you have any advice on whether opening another clinic or relocating to a larger facility is best. I know there are a billion factors, and I have not provided many details!!!

I've been contemplating opening a very small one room office in another city (where I actually live) for a number of years, but I haven't found the right time.

I have also contemplated opening something in a city about 3.5 hours from me in the future (using that office for a final transition/move when I get into my 60's, by practicing there part time and my original office part-time for about 2 years while building it up)... but, not right now.

I think we may have had a thread from someone in the past... I'll look for it while people are answering.

Thats a great idea! I should start up a mini practice in the cayman islands. 30yrs from now I will have a thriving practice!

I think the distance between the two locations is probably the most important factor in deciding between 1 or 2 locations. If they are too close together, the added expense of a 2nd location may not be worthwhile.

7 years ago, I moved my office approximately 10 minutes drive from the old one - tripling my square fooeforum.xxxe in the process. Don't be afraid to negotiate when it comes to your lease. Especially in this market, I've found everything to be negotiable.

Even though it was a short 10min drive did you find patients moved with you? Was there much competition in the area?

IIRC, I didn't lose any clients in the transition. I communicated the move for weeks beforehand and built clients' curiosity about the new space. I moved from a neighborhood shopping center to downtown - the new office has much more competition located much closer than the old office did, but there is a reason so much competition is located nearby - THAT is where the clients are. Don't be afraid of being located near the competition.

FWIW, my experience in moving was just the opposite of Pete's. I moved less than 1 to 2 miles from my prior location and lost a huge chunk of my "people" back in 1998. Much of it due to traffic patterns, lights and how slow the traffic flow is in the area ( many of those people coming from North of my location for almost 45 mins.). The move changed that drive for those clients to something near an hour. So, some of it will depend on where the clients are coming *from*.

I eventually built back up again, but it took some time (year-ish)... however, where my location is now, I am right off of two major freeways, so I get clients from as far as 45 mins. out in every direction of the city now.

Thanks I tend to think if we were to relocate anymore than a few blocks from our current location we would loose a huge chunk of our current clients. Even though we have a niche market & our therapists are the best of the best I don't always think clients know what a good therapist is...
