External Hard-drive basic questions from a newbie!?

Okay, so I usually left my external hooked up to my desk top pc all the time to supplement my itunes.

Desktop is now almost dead... so I want to hook it up to my laptop. However, I travel with my laptop often, and I don't want to haul around my external drives when I go to study, but when I travel, I don't exactly use my itunes, I just use the net.

When I disconnect my external from my laptop, turn it on elsewhere, then bring it home and reconnect it, will it recognize everything or will i have to resync every individual thing in itunes each time? I have a Western Digital MyBook.
