Fire officials said they believe women working at a local massage parlor are living inside the business.

The fire inspector found bunk beds, a mattress and other items at Bamboo Massage and Spa that indicate employees were working and living inside.

Mitch Broderick owns a barber shop next to Bamboo Massage and Spa. He said the business is a frequent topic of conversation at his establishment.

The West Des Moines Fire Department responded to an anonymous complaint at Bamboo Monday.

Officials said they found clothes on the bed and boxed food in addition to the bunk beds and mattress.

Bamboo’s owner, Dan Hoover, denied his employees live in the commercial building. He declined to comment on the situation.

Bamboo Massage and Spa has multiple listings on sites such as Craigslist and Backpage.com. The facility is open from early morning until late at night all week.

“Once they opened, I realized there was never any cars coming or going,” Broderick said.

The city of West Des Moines gave the owner 10 days to become code compliant by removing the bunk beds and mattress.
