Giving 'massage' when not qualified or insured for it?

Hi all,

I posted yesterday about treating a 10 year old with Asperger's Syndrome (thanks for all your helpful replies!), since then I have spoken to the Mother in a bit more detail and a couple of things are bothering me:

The child has been having reflexology treatments quite regularly (not since November last year though) and really enjoys them. I told his Mum that treatments for children are not as long - 25-30 mins max, but she said he has been having treatments lasting 45 minutes. ( I have managed to insist that the first treatment will definitely be shorter in length as it's the first time he's getting a treatment from me) But for the future I don't know whether to stick to my own rules or increase the treatment length as this is what he's used to -plus what do I charge? I normally charge £20 for 30 mins (in child's own home) but 45 mins of reflex is pretty much the same length as an adult treatment; by the time we've had a little chat and settled in it will easily run to an hour. On top of this I am treating in a clinic as I will need the Mum in the room with me, and I will have to pay room rental.

My other issue is that the Mum told me that his previous reflexologist would break the treatment up by massaging his shoulders head and neck which he loved. I told her that I'm not qualified in this area but she said it did not matter, and that it's just basic rubbing.....even so, I'm not sure I feel comfortable with this . Surely I would need insurance especially as I'm treating a child, and it just isn't anything I'm used to or even remotely proficient in.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Hi Bloomholistic,

What would you normally charge for an hour of your time? I think I would give them the catchup/chat time free and charge £30- 35 for 45 mins treatment. Perhaps offer a discount (3 for 2 etc) for block bookings.

Thanks for that - Energylz, I was under the impression that most reflexologists give shorter treatments to children as their feet are smaller to begin with so the actual routine takes less time, they may not be able to still for as long as adults, plus they're smaller all over in general so I guess their systems don't need/can't take as much stimulation as an adult body.

I normally charge £30 at home for an hour - this includes the 'chat' at the beginning, which is actually a crucial part of the treatment; the client gets to air their needs and wants, update me on changes in their health or medication and tell me how the last treatment was for them, and generally how they've been feeling. I charge £35 at the centre as I have to pay room rental and travle costs to get there.....so I think I may charge £30....I just for some reason feel bad for charging the same amount for a child as an adult - even though I know it should be the time I give which is the deciding factor!?!

I think I'll wait till I see them on Saturday and explain the options to her - £20 for 30 mins or £30 for 50-60 mins....I really HATE the money part!!
