Please can anyone tell me anything about this as I have not heard of it before and can't find it in any of my books.

I just bought this oil at the weekend, it is so refreshing and uplifting. I always keep a log of all the oils I buy, this is what I have on Grapefruit Oil.



Grapefruit
Grapefruit oil is extracted from Citrus paradisi (a.k.a. Citrus racemosa amd C. maxima var. racemosa) from the Rutaceae family and is also known as shaddock.

Oil properties
Grapefruit essential oil has a sharp refreshing smell and is pale yellow in color. The viscosity is watery. Like all citrus oils, grapefruit oil should be used within six month of purchase.

Origin of grapefruit oil
Originally from Asia, it is now cultivated in the USA, Brazil and Israel. Grapefruit is a glossy-leaved tree, about 10 meters (30 feet) high, with white flowers and large, pale yellow fruit.
The oil glands are imbedded deep within the peel and yield a small amount of essential oil.

Extraction
Grapefruit essential oil is extracted from the fresh peel by cold compression and yields 0.5-1%.

Chemical composition
The main chemical components are: Paradisiol, Limonene, Gamma Terpinene, Nootketone, Cadinene, Neral and Citronellal.

Precautions
Grapefruit oil is non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitizing and although listed as non-phototoxic it can irritate the skin if exposed to strong sunlight after treatment.

Therapeutic properties
Some of the therapeutic properties of Grapefruit oil are: antidepressant, antiseptic, aperitif, diuretic, disinfectant, lymphatic stimulant, tonic and anti-infectious.

Uses
Grapefruit has a high vitamin C content and is therefore valuable to the immune system. It helps protect against colds and flu.
It has an effect on obesity; its diuretic properties help with water retention and cellulite.

Grapefruit oil is used in cases of muscle fatigue and stiffness. It has a helpful effect on congested oily skin and acne; it tones the skin and tissues, and promotes hair growth.

It is valuable in cases of stress, depression and nervous exhaustion, as well as headaches.

Summary
Grapefruit oil has great benefits for the immune system, it helps with skin problems, and can be used for muscle stiffness, water retention and for the nervous system.

Burners and vaporizers
In vapor therapy grapefruit oil can be used for: hangovers, headaches, over indulgence and mental tiredness.

Blended oil or in the bath
Grapefruit oil can be used in blended massage oil or diluted in the bath to assist with: cellulite, colds and flu, lack of energy, jet lag, muscle fatigue, overweight, headaches, moodiness and mental and physical tiredness.

Lotions, creams and washes
Used in a base cream, lotion or as a wash, Grapefruit oil can be used for a greasy, congested and acne skin.

Grapefruit oil blends well with
Although most essential oils blend well together, Grapefruit essential oil blends particularly well with: Bergamot, Lavender, Geranium, Palmarosa and Frankincense.

I think Maureen was looking for grapefruit seed oil (which I haven't heard of, but will look up later). Grapefruit oil is made from the peel of the fruit.

Hi,

I think Grapefruit Seed Extract used as a preservative in lotion making (at least I hope so, because I've just ordered some!!!)

Do you sell your soaps to the general public? If so how do you go about it re regulations etc. if indeed there are any. Would be very interested as I want to expand my lotions and potions beyond my clients if possible.

Hi Maureen,

I think what you are looking for is also called citricidal, that is grapefruit seed extract, it's not an oil, it's kind of gloopy and sticky. It's very good for treating candida/yeast infections/parasites etc. You can also use it for many many other purposes such as disinfecting things. You need to dilute it in water as it is extremely strong and tastes very bitter. Instructions will be on the bottle. I have found it very useful.

I haven't sold any soaps as yet but may do in the future. We are a family with sensitive skins so I purely make it for us at the moment. I get my recipes from the Handmade Soap Book.

As I have only just started practising I am a little unsure about lotions and potions. Have made a few E45 based creams with added essential oils for my boys but not branched out as yet. I suppose I am a little unsure of where to get the base creams and lotions from for the best. Any help would be gratefully received.

You are all amazing. Isn't HP wonderful there is always someone here to help in so many ways - so thank you one and all.

Being a diabetic I suffer from abscesses from time to time. They are usually no problem, a couple of days dabbing with tea tree and they are gone. However, this time I have a few which I have now had for about three weeks and I can't manage to heal them. The trouble is that they are in my groin (which is not an easy place to heal). I am using tea tree, manuka and ravensara (not all together) Someone suggested that I mix one of the oils with grapefruit seed but am not sure how to go about this. When I was in Amphora the other day I bought 'glycerin extract of grapefruit seed'. Now what ? Do I just mix a few drops of oil with the grapefruit seed ?

Maureen, have you tried aloe vera gel? I tried some aloe vera gel with a couple of drops of grapefruit seed extract (Citricidal) on a minor burn and it healed ever so quickly! Just my personal experience but I just really believe in those two products because they have helped me in the past.

Strange world isn't it ? Only last week one of my clients gave me a large tube of Aloe Vera so I guess I will be able to try your suggestion this morning. Will let you know how it goes

maureen, the citricidal that massagemonkey mentions is a natural type of antibiotic. it does in fact taste terrible so i have to have it in some juice. its certainly worth a try!

And such a strong natural antibiotic (I don't want to make any claims, but just relate my personal experience) that the last time I took it was recently when I had really bad gastroenteritis, felt really ill and weak with a high temperature and non-stop visits to the loo, I took the maximum dose of citricidal (I think it was 12 drops in a glass of water) twice throughout the morning and by about 4 in the afternoon I was fresh as a daisy! Temperature gone, visits to the loo stopped, and felt absolutely fine. I really thought it so unbelievable that I now carry the little bottle with me wherever I go just in case! I think it's that good (it does taste horrid though!![:'(] Really bitter). But I repeat, just to cover myself, that was just my personal experience, and you should always see a doctor if you're ill, blah blah blah... .

Hi Maureen,

The stuff I am talking about is the stuff you have bought I think, because it comes added to glycerine. I have an information sheet on it, unfortunately not on my system or I would email it to you. Here's some of the skin care advice on it, I'm sure you'll be able to work out something pertinent to your condition:

Athletes' foot. Soak feet in basin of warm water with 5-10 drops on Citricidal. Put one drop onto cotton wool and place between toes.

Cold Sores. Add 5 drops of citri to 50 drops of vegetable glycerine or to any hygenic cream and apply with a cotton bud 2-3 times a day.

Cuts and Wounds. Add 3-5 drops to half a pint of water and clean cuts and wounds.

Dandruff. Add 3-5 drops to a mild shampoo, wait 3-5 mins before rinsing. Avoid contact with eyes.

Facial Wash. Add 1-3 drops to liquid cleanser, avoid eyes and rinse thoroughly.

Fungal nail infections. Put one drop directly onto affected nail, along cuticle and underneath the front of the nail. Can do the same for warts and verucca.

There's loads more uses but I'm running the risk of boring everyone! you can use it for head lice, kitchen use to disinfect, mouth wash, nasal wash, ringworm, toothbrush cleaner, to add to water when abroad to kill bugs, and to spray on houseplants to protect against bugs.

It's magic!

Good news - that nasty abscess has at last gone. I put a few drops of the grapefruit seed with aloe vera gel and applied it a few times a day. Wonderful stuff. Thank you all for your advice
Am now feeling a lot happier
