To make this short and sweet:
We adopted a rescued lab/pittbull mix when she was 6 weeks old. She is now 1 1/2 years old. She's spayed, loving, smart and well trained, but she is always fearful and not well socialized, she likes our cats and people who visit. She has tons of energy and we (husband and vet) thought that it would be a good idea to get a second dog, smaller and younger.
We chose a Dauschand and we brought him home last night. Well we had them meet in the front yard around garage and after some smelling, the friendly dauschand became challeneged at our dog. They both growled and snapped at eachother and went through the whole, who's the boss deal. Well once the puppy felt extremely submissive (not looking into eyes, avoiding the dog, scared) our dog is STILL trying to snap at the puppy. We have to keep them separated and really work in showling love to the older dog, who will then avoid the puppy for a while until it loses concentration and focuses back on snapping at the puppy. Especially if the puppy is near us.
It's been one night, but it was completey stressful on all parties, should we just give the puppy away to a friend of ours, or try to work at it for the next couple of days??
The puppy is so scared and submissive we feel like we are torturing her with our dogs behavior.
Any stories, suggestions...etc?
