We are currently in the process of hiring a new receptionist. We put an add on Craig's List and received over 100 resumes. I guess it's a sign of the economy as we usually only get 30 or so responses. I have spent several hours going through these resumes and I don't know whether to laugh or pull my hair out. I thought I share some of this with you. Even though these are people applying for a clerical job, the basics are still the same.
#1- If your email address is something along the lines of "hotbabe69@...." or "FrickinA@......" you may want to consider getting a seperate email account for sending out resumes. Oh...and these are real email addresses that we received resumes from.
#2- Please check your resume for spelling, punctuation and gramatical errors. May sound like a no-brainer but you wouldn't believe what I've seen today. Example
#3- If your high school GPA was a 2.8, it was nothing to brag about. Having a C average does not make you stand out in a crowd and it doesn't speak well of your "excellence." Leave it off your resume.
#4- If your work experience consists of a lot of jobs where you only worked at that company for a month or two, leave those jobs off. We are looking for quality, not quantity.
#5- Your cover letter and resume should be written in proper "business" language. Don't start it with "Hey ya'll" or "what's up." Don't put 3 exclaimation marks after "I really want to work for you!!!" I might use 3 !!!'s when writing to my Mom or posting here but it has no place in your cover letter and neither do smiley icons.
#6- Don't ask for $30,000/year for a part-time (18hrs a week) receptionist job.
#7- If you had to leave a job after only a short time there for a legitimate reason (the business closed, you moved and so on) please put that on the resume so it doesn't reflect badly on you.
#8- If the job is in St. Pete, Fl and you live in Spring Hill (over an hour away) Valrico (oh, maybe 45 minutes) or Cape Coral (4-5 hours) please save your effort and our time and paper and don't send us your resume.
I could probably go on and on but I have to get back to looking at more resumes as we had 6 more come in as I was typing this.
