How can I introduce my new puppy to my old dog?

My four year old dachshund was very aggressive when meeting the new puppy- it's a three month old dachshund mixed with some other dog, we are unsure of what other type. We introduced them to eachother outside for the first time, and my older dachshund bit the new dog on the ear. She didn't break skin, but the puppy is very frightened. How can I teach my old dog to be kinder and make her feel more comfortable about the situation?
Right now, the new puppy is in a crate, and my older dachshund is running around the house, sniffing the crate everyone in a while, and barking. Is this normal?

ok take a towel and rub it ALL over the puppy i'm talking if you can get the pup to even pee on the towel that would be great! then give the towel to the older dog and let them smell it and stuff. maybe that will work

Ok... Im not totally sure what to do my dogs did not react as badly as that to each other but... If you have a sliding glass door, then you could put one on one side of it and the other on the other side... maybe your older dog on the outside, and your new dog/puppy on the inside??... Or something like that.
