How do I introduce the new cat to the territorial dog?

We got a new cat a few days ago and she still has yet to come into contact with the dog (who is very territorial), because my sister freaks out every time they're both in the house at the same time. most of the time, the dog doesn't really react to the presence of a cat, however, he got to my old cat a few times, once resulting in a moderate injury, and he got my moms cat last year and she ended up dieing from the injury.
Is there anyway to 'introduce' them without risking the dog getting to out of hand?

The easiest way is for now, to set up a baby gate with one animal on both sides. make sure they are both collared and there is no way for either animal to get to the other. Have one person with each animal holding them and the gate. Chances are the dog will bark and freak, but hold them both there. This prevents injury and lets the animals smell each other's smells.
