how do you introduce a dog to a large body of water?

neither of my dogs have ever been swimming, but they do like chasing water from the water hose so they dont mind getting wet. but how do i get them to swim in a lake? i would start them off at a dog park but i think there would be too many dogs for their first time. if it makes any difference their both medium breed sized 40-50lb range

Remember that some dogs don't like water and it isn't always instinct for a dog to know how to swim.

If they like the hose though, you are probably good with deeper water. Try buying a kiddie pool, the plastic blue kind and filling that with water and see how they react. If it's good the next step is to take them to a lake where dogs are allowed and play fetch, throwing tennis balls out into the water. Start shallow though and make sure they are okay with getting their feet and bellies wet.

If they don't like swimming, don't force them. Just get another hose and let them play.

I would get them a life jacket first and let them play in the shallow end. Don't make the mistake of swimming with them though - swim next to them, don't hold them - their instincts will take over.
