I have a new kitten and trying to introduce him to my current kitten? Help!?

I have already got a 4 month old kitten (Smudge) and have been given another kitten who is about 3 months old. The new one (Tiger) keeps hissing at Smudge and his ears are back whereas Smudge just rolls over wanting to play. But this morning the were 'punching' each other and then the were rolling round fighting. I have seperated them and put them in separate rooms to calm down.
How can I help them to get along or is this not normal?

This is normal! One cat will always try to be more territorial. I have 2 cats and afterr 1 die i go get another one. The cat who has been there the longest will be mean to the other cat and will try to show the new cat whose boss. Wait a couple weeks, they wont become best of friend but they will accept each other and within a couple months they will be fine with one anouther. Just give it time and mesage me if you have any more quesions!

They will just have to get use to eachother. maybe let them see each other a couple times a day when ur around so they dont fight

Do not separate them for months. I hate this idea. Let them go. Giving them a time out in a room for half an hour is fine but not for months. They are kittens and will work things out. It's all normal. The quicker you toss them together the easier it will be for them. I would bet in a couple of days they will be fine. Play with them together with you. That will bond the three of you. Use catnip and a string toy.

I have 3 cats. I had the one in the house alone for about a year. It is about 2. Then I got another older 10 year old cat. The 2 year old cat absolutely hated the new cat. She beat her up for months. I had to keep the new cat in the bedroom away from the other cat. She has made this her comfort zone. They now get along fine...about 2 years later. I recently got another cat a few months ago. That time it was the opposite. The new cat beats up on the other ones. You never know what will happen with cats. They have big attitudes. I would try to keep them away from each other for a few months. Let them see each other, but never leave them alone together.

This is a cat's normal instinct to fight with each other. They are very territorial..but it should ease up in about minimum a month most of the time. Sometimes they just don't like each other. With them being kittens they will become more curious trying to see what is happening and you will often find that Tiger will smell Smudge(very cute name btw) and if Smudge turns around that make cause a little spat. They really do want to be 'friends' but it just takes some time. When they finally do start playing I gaurantee that you will get lost of laughs from them. =)

the new kitten is scared, that's why his ears are back.
are you sure they were fighting and not playing?
they'll get alone eventually, cats always do and they always fight first. might want to ask the vet about fixing them, though. that could help. nice names, smudge and tiger.

Like the user Just Me said, it can take months for cats to work out their dominance/territory issues. I had my first cat for a few years before we adopted another cat. I think it probably took six months before a decent truece was called. During that time it was pretty bad though. Last month, about two years after our last addition, we added a third adopted cat and it's started again, this time against her. My original cat is dealing better, maybe because she's been there and done that and is getting too old to care, but the second cat is still pretty upset. They'll get there, it just takes time. And I would not recommend discouraging their fighting. It's their way of dealing with the new situation. They need to see who is "top cat." And i was not implying to seperate them for months. Then they'll never get used to each other. I'm just saying they will squabble for months.
