If religion was introduced today, how would it affect society?

I have and RE project to do on religion (duh!) and we have to answer this question in one section.. any help or ideas will be helpful.

Scientology was introduced 50 or so years ago.
Tarvuism is only a few years old.

I think new religions will only have an impact if they are non-theistic.

The question assumes that there'd be no religion, which implies that every single person on Earth would accept most scientific explanations. So the religion would probably have to cater to those beliefs. So it depends on the religion. Most of them would be laughed at without proof. Something like Buddhism might be accepted.
