Hi Phil,
I'm with Towergate (formerly SMG) and I pay just over £100 per year for my insurance. You are right in saying that these prices have gone up drastically in the last few years. Sadly this is down to the claim culture that you can now see on all of the adverts. As public liability (as well as professional indemnity, product liability etc) is essential for any therapist we really do need this, but sadly these blame/claims are in the same insurance industry as our policies and due to these they have pushed costs up, not to mention the government regulation that was brought into the insurance industry in 2005.
To be perfectly honest with you, i know that there are cheaper policies out there than the one i have, but cheapest is VERY RARELY the best in my experience. For example, with something such as household insurance you can get this fairly cheaply, but it will actually cover you for very little, such as only theft or fire or flood. when you come to claim you find this out and wish you had spent a little more so that if you had damaged/broken something, you would still have been covered. The reason that we often pay a bit more for household insurance is because we are much more likely to use it than a professional indemnity policy.
As mentioned before, i pay £100ish a year for mine, and to get £1,000,000 cover for 100 quid is pretty damn good value in my eyes, even if there are others out there cheaper. I know towergate are good with claims as i know people who have been insured with them and had to claim, and they've told me that the service they got was brilliant, reassuring them every step of the way, keeping in regular contact, updating them whenever something was heard from either the insurers or the person making the claim etc.
As a result of this I will stick by them, as i know i am paying for what will be a brilliant service!! (I just hope that i never have to use it!!)
I mean, what is £20-£30 quid a year, compared to the difference between getting the service and having a claim successfully defended, against saving the money, having a claim that is not covered and you left without a practice, your name in tatters and a bill for thousands of pounds that you can't possibly pay off?
