Kitten Info: 8 weeks old. Male. In the breeder's household there was a dog, and apparently he didn't like that dog very much either (hiss when the dog was close). I've had him for a week.
Dog Info: 4 years old. Female. Shitzu-maltese mix (small toy dog). She has never seen a cat before and has only been introduced to dogs, but she is usually scared of other pets. She's more of a "people" dog.
Problem: Dog is not aggressive to the kitten. Dog does get excited, however, and the kitten will claw/hiss at the dog when approached.
Things to Note: I am a college student who goes home during the weekend. The kitten stays with me during the weekdays. The dog and kitten will only see each other DURING THE WEEKEND. It is not an option for the kitten to stay at my college residence for the weekend. So therefore, the kitten will be introduced to a dog AND unfamiliar territory, but only once a week.
Situation: If they don't get along, my mom WILL make me get rid of the kitten because my dog was there first. My dog is NOT aggressive to the kitten and I think she actually liked it until he started hissing and clawing at her. Now I think she's afraid of him because she gets scared easily. All my dog does is sniff at the kitten and wag her tail. She hasn't barked at the kitten and has not shown any signs of aggression. Although once, she put her paw on the kitten and kind of stroked the kitten's back?? The kitten was not hurt by this. The dog will respond to commands like "No!" and "Be nice!", but the kitten is.. well, it's a kitten, he doesn't really respond to any commands yet.
HOWEVER, my kitten HATES my dog. He does not show aggression unless my dog approaches him, but he usually hisses and he has tried to claw my dog a few times along with spitting. He seems to do better when he is in my lap while the dog roams free. He will allow the dog to sniff him when he is in my lap without much hissing. When in my lap, he only hisses when my easily excited dog makes a sudden movement to approach him. He has only tried to claw at my dog when he is NOT in my lap and they are both roaming free (under strict supervision, of course).
Currently: The kitten is being kept in the laundry room that has a closed door. But we must open that door frequently because there is a separate door that leads to our garage, so there is a dog crate that is set up as well. However, the kitten has learned to climb the dog crate even though it is almost 3 feet high so we close the door as a precaution.
I'm pretty much open to any ideas or suggestions. I would like advice on actually solving the aggression problem instead of giving the kitten away or not going home during the weekends, because I don't want to run away from a problem. If there's a chance this is gonna work, I would like to try.
PLEASE HELP!
