Introducing an aggressive Dog to another Dog.?

ok, so I have this German Shepherd Dog,Owen, He is aggressive towards other Dogs, When he see's them out the window he tries to break the window getting to them, his hair stands on end and he looks like he wants to kill them... When my boss bought over his German Shepherd the first few minutes were hell, but he eventually calmed down. Here's the problem, I was at a Shelter trying to Adopt another dog, and Owen went crazy he was trying to attack the dog and it was bad, they would not let me adopt the dog obviously because of Owen's reaction. Can someone tell me how to properly introduce an aggressive dogs toward another dog.

Owen sounds like a very dominant alpha male dog. If he were to be introduced to any other dog, it needs to be off "his" property at a neutral location. If you get another dog at all, consider a female and a submissive personality type so he knows he's still "boss" and doesn't feel threatened.

In all honesty though, it sounds like Owen is suited to living in a one-dog family, and it may be wiser and safer (for the other dog especially) if Owen remains the only dog at your house.

I agree with what lauren said and ignore the other idiots. My friend has a dog who is the same way and when socialising him to my dog we took them to the park both on leads and she took the agressive one inside the play area so that we had the big ass railings between them and let them get used to each other (this was at an ungodly hour of the morning so we knew there wouldnt be any kids around or other distractions) then when we knew we could control them both we walked them round the field till they stopped going for each other. It was a two week long step by step experience and that is just for one dog. If I were you I would pick out a dog a very very calm one and get the shelter to help you introduce them properly. Once they owen sees that you accept the other dog and expect him too as well he should start to calm down a little and eventually start seeing the other dog as pack (this is where the walking comes in because it plays to their pack instinct). It might also hellp if the other dog is female as male dogs are normally less aggressive towards females.

You're way past treating this at home, you need a professional to work with your dog.

I don't blame the shelter, nobody would voluntarily give you the option of taking one of their dogs when they see the reaction your dog has towards others. This is not a good behavior or an easy one to get him to change. It's also a danger for any dog he can reach---you're looking at a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Obviously the first answers will do nothing to help your situation. I am sure that you love Owen very much and wouldn't trade him. I once had a bulldog that was extremely aggressive as well. We had a puppy show up in the yard, and decided to keep him. Because he was a small puppy, the bulldog had no problem with him and they became quite close. I have seen this phenomenon occur more than once. So, one option may be to get a puppy instead of a grown dog. Another scenario that may work for you: Allow Owen to approach a dog that is inside a cage or fence. Make sure he is on a leash, and allow him to get used to the idea of the new dog.Once they become acquainted, take Owen away long enough for you to let the new dog out of the cage. And bring him back within a minute or two when both dogs are under strong supervision and on short leashes. Throughout this process, you should have a calm voice with lots of praise. pet Owen for doing well.. but don't punish him for being offended. Take it slowly and let him know when he is doing right.
