Introducing basset hound to rats?

Hey everyone,
If any one has expirience with this sort of thing i could really use your help:
I have six rats and a basset hound puppy, i would really love to be able to get my rats downstairs without worrying about how my puppy will react. So does anyone know how to introdue a rat to a basset hound.
I know that basset hounds are kind of hunting dogs but thier job was just to find prey never to kill it and i'm sure that stan wouldn't hurt a fly.
Any tips would be greatly appriciated! Thanks!
