Introducing my geckos to handling again?

I have had my two geckos - a leopard gecko and an African fat-tailed gecko - for 5 years now and I want to start handling them! I got them both from Petsmart (as adults), where they were handled on a regular basis, and now I want to start that up again.

How do I get my geckos back use to being handled?
Is it better to handle them at night? When they have been out for a while or right when I switch the light over?

I don't want to freak them out by just reaching my hand in there, but I don't really know what to do either so...help me please!!??!!
