Introducing raw pork to your dog?

How many raw feeders here feed their dogs raw pork? What were/are your experiences with feeding raw pork? I'm just curious, I've read a lot of different things on raw pork.

I'm pretty new to feeding raw and I was going to start to introduce pork into my dog's diet but I'm just a little worried. Has anyone had any problems with feeding raw pork? Thanks for your help and opinions!

Introduce pork the same way you would anything else... gradually, in small amounts. The first time you feed it, mix a small amount in with a meal the dog is used to. You can slowly increase the amount each time and eventually you can feed meals that are all pork.

I actually just introduced pork to my dogs recently (a week ago) also and they've been on raw prey-model for two years. I had no problems. I fed them a pork only meal last night already and the stools were fine.

If it was trichinosis you're worried about, that's a non-issue these days in developed parts of the world. Especially if your getting your meat from a grocery store or butcher where it is meant for human consumption. There's really nothing to worry about. It's a great red meat protein source, but it is quite fatty (which can cause loose stools) so just be sure to check your dogs stools after you feed it.

My suggestion is to simply not buy a lot at first.

I would still be feeding it if it didn't give my dog gas so bad it nearly killed everyone in a 6 mile radius. After a week of that, I decided pork wasn't a good match for her.

May people feed it with no problems at all.

In general, trichinosis is no longer a big problem. It is more related to the old method of feeding garbage and unsanitary waste to pigs - that is not really practiced anymore.

I don't feed pork (yet anyways), it can carry trichinosis, a parasite found in pork and wild meat. Freezing it for 3-4 weeks will kill it though if you wanted to feed it. I do feed wild game and this is how we treat it first. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichinosis
Other meats I feed are raw turkey necks, chicken back, beef organ (heart is best!) and fish such as salmon and sardines.

One word...tapeworm. Not a good idea to give your dog raw meat.
