Introducing solid food to 6.5 month old?

My daughter is 6.5 months old and weighs 15 lbs. She was breastfed until 4.5 months then we switched to formula. We (my husband and I) have been trying off and on to get her on solids since we've always been told it should be done around 4-6 months, but all she does is suck on the spoon and her whole face becomes covered in whatever we're feeding her, so it's major cleanup duty. lol All the videos I see on youtube, the babies aren't as messy. Is that normal or does this mean she's not ready for solids?

Our boys have always been messy eaters. With our first when spoon feeding he would get the food everywhere! He would be absolutely covered even the hair on the back of his head! With our second we went straight to finger foods and it was still messy. His first food was banana and oh boy! It was in his hair, down his nappy, in his ears and up his nose.

I never took it as a sign that they weren't ready for solids just that they were messy eaters. They never refused the food just got messy eating it.

We usually just stripped them down to their nappies or used old (or previously stained) clothing at feed times. On really messy days they usually ended up in the tub for a bit of a play after meals.

my baby was pretty messy at first because she was just learning how to eat just keep trying and she will catch on before you know it and there wont be nearly as much clean up

If you are just starting out and she is doing this its because she isn't use to the spoon concept keep trying it everyday for about 5 or so day and if she still doesn't get the hang of it was a week or so and try again.

Everyone will have a different answer for this. I didn't give my babies solids until 10 months and they were perfectly healthy being breastfed only. This is something that should be discussed with the babie's doctor. Until then, just make sure she's getting enough food into her, even if it's just formula. It has all the nutrients she needs. You can keep trying to feed her cereal, just be patient with her. It's ok if she 's messy.
