Marketing: donating a % of earnings to your community

Has anybody enacted a "program" in their practice where they donate a % or portion of their earnings for a predetermined period of time (week, month) to a local organization?

You could contact the charity/group in advance and let them know your plan. This would give them an opportunity to "advertise" the fact to the public before you began the offer. You could also let your clients know via your newsletter/website/postcard.

I think it would be a great way to give back to a local organization you care about while helping to promote your business. Your clients would also have the opportunity to help the cause by getting a massage from you. Sounds like a win-win-win situation to me.

What am I not considering here, and how would this be handled come tax time?

charitable donation. Make sure youdeposit all the proceeds thenwrite a check and that you don't have like a tip jar or somethign that goes directly to them. Get a receipt for the donation. If you are sole proprietor they can receipt to you, but if you are llc they should probably give the receipt to your business.

good idea i've known some lmts that have done this. one got an article in the paper.

At tax time your donations are deductible as an advertising expense.

Be sure the organization has obtained a 501(c)(3) designation from the IRS.

10% is a traditional figure for tithing.
i'd think that in this instance, the number should be somewhere between 10 and 50% based on your financial need. the more you can give away, the better it is for your campaign, the charity, and your karma.
but don't cut off your nose to spite your face. make sure you can afford what you choose to donate.

I did this last year for the tsunami red cross relief. I gave all my tips plus 10% of my regular massage income. Was able to give them a check for almost $300.
