I was in Shanghai last year. At the time, I ran into a few ex-patriots (Cdns, Brits, Italians - all of whom typically run the bars/restaurants). They advised me to stay clear of them. especially going by yourself. Alot of set you up for a strong-arm rip off tactics. Use great caution. Also, the "good looking" FS can be really expensive. Try US$200+. I passed, which was really difficult as a large part of the population is generally taller than those living in the south (HK). So looking at some of the women on the streets, tall, beautiful and fashionable (love that short skirt and booties look) was almost too much for the average bear to handle.
Off topic. A popular hang-out (or use to be) is the Manhattan and the "something" Park restaurant/bar. Alot of ex-pats go there. The formr is smoky as all shit but a great place to meet some Cdn for local unbiased information (about girls, etc). Go there from 11:00pm - 3:00am, any night. Entertainment starts late there.
