What is the general opinion of a neon sign for a massage business??

I wouldn't want anything that said, 'open 24 hours' or anything like that. Simply the words, 'Massage Therapy." This would work well to draw attention to some locations with poor signage or no lights to light up a sign at night.

I have found website which sell signs which are made just for a spa or massage therapy business.

I heart neon. If done well I think it could be a nice distinctive touch, and certainly build awareness during hours you're not open.

The fact you're concerned that it might be seen as tacky means that it will definitely be seen as tacky by some people.
I think a lightbox display would be viewed as tacky by fewer people.

I'm mixed on this one. For the most part I get visions of the Oriental Spa slimey places in strip malls--eww!
But I have a friend in Ohio who has one for a window in his 2nd story office building to increase visibility, and it's rather tasteful.

Maybe color choice and font would be important to consider?

i saw some MTs in houston who did have neon signs, probably for visibility on busy streets even in the light of day, and because of the other signage i did not question the legitimacy of the business. also, adult entertainment venues were usually up front down there. massage therapy was massage therapy and the gentlemen's clubs made sure you knew what they did.

where i live now, that line seems more blurred. legislation keeps adult entertainment out of city limits, so when i see a neon open sign there is usually another sign that says "use the back door."

There is a couple who does massage across town above a hair salon, they have a neon sign that says "Massage Therapy" (in script) in the window of the salon to draw in "traffic."
You notice the sign, but sorry, I can't tell you what their business is like. *shrug*

When I envision neon associated with massage therapy it brings to mind massage parlors. I like neon in general but not sure I would go into a place with a neon sign for massage. Of course assuming anything from a sign is misleading but it is what pops in my head.

I think the reason so many MT's think neon is tacky is because bold signage is not typical in a healthcare setting. There seem to be unwritten rules about what is acceptable and what is not.

Neon gets attention no matter what the business. Do you think too many massage therapists sit back and wait for people to notice they are there? I do.

What makes a non neon sign that simply says 'massage therapy' so much better than a neon sign which says the exact same thing, except it is bright and attention getting?

This company also makes custom light boxes, which are less expencive than neon signs. I hadn't thought of light boxes. Thanks for the tip Melb.

I used to work in a place that had a neon sign. We were located on the second floor, so it gave us some visibility. The sign was the business name with logo in soft (well, soft for neon) shades of blue and purple. The owner put a lot of thought and money into the design of the sign, and I think that made a difference. Neon is not really my thing, but this was clearly thought out not to give a "parlor" vibe. I have no idea if anyone chose not to come there because of the sign, though. I do know that I didn't have a single inappropriate client the entire time I worked there, so people who did come in were not confused about what we offered. I think if you do choose to use neon, choose something a little more subdued than, say, Crazy Eddie's Appliance Emporium, or some such.

I share a space with a yoga studio that uses a neon sign. Rather than text, they commissioned a beautiful lotus blossom as the sign. I've thought about adding a "healing hand" (you know, the hand with the spiral on the palm) in another window. Maybe if you used something pictorial like that, there would be no question what kind of massage you were providing- while still alerting people to your existence! Neon can look very nice and not "seedy" if done right.

I agree with some of the comments above, and echo that if done correctly, it can be very tasteful. A business up the street from me uses neon behind metal letters to light the wall. Very soft and professional looking. I think the bare tube neon would be hard to be tastefull with. I have also seen neon used to add color to a light box sign, behind the plastic. Adds more punch than white tubes glowing through colored film.
I am currently looking into a carved wood releif sign that would be lit by a spot light. There are so many options... talk to a good sign person, and surf sign company sights for more ideas.

Funny, I just drove past a neon sign the other day. It's in a hair salon window and there two signs one says Pedicures and the other one Massage. I thought it looked OK and added visibility.

I've always liked neon in general, but there is the sleaze factor that can be associated with it.

I checked out the website you mentioned and I think you can really remove a lot of that sleaze factor just by getting a sign that says massage "therapy". See sign: Massage Therapy Neon Sign / Code: HNZ-40-37

That seems to make a difference in my visual.

I agree that thinking about the colors will also make a big difference.
