Massage workshop set for Tuesday

PORT ANGELES — Johanna Perkins will present a lecture on paradoxical breathing from 6:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The lecture will be held at Halberg Chiropractic, 228 E. Laurisden Blvd.

Perkins, an instructor at Port Townsend School of Massage, will demonstrate treatment with polarity therapy and rib-cage work.


Licensed massage therapists can earn two continuing education credits by attending the workshop.

A donation of $10 is required to cover costs.

Open house

PORT ANGELES — Clallam Coworking of Sequim recently announced the opening of a Port Angeles location.

The public is invited to an open house from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the new co-working location in The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave.

Clallam Coworking caters to individuals who work remotely or independently and need access to work space, high speed internet and access to private conference rooms.

The business operates on a membership basis with membership costs based on monthly usage.

Charity will begin taking donations

Operation Christmas Child will accept donations beginning Monday in Clallam and Jefferson counties.

Donations such as toys, school supplies, hygiene items and letters of encouragement packaged in a shoebox will be accepted at locations in Forks, Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Townsend until Nov. 19.

The drop-off locations and hours are:

• Forks — The Caring Place, 481 W. E St. —

4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 1 p.m. to

3 p.m. Saturday and Nov. 18; and from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Nov. 19.

• Sequim — Eastern Hills Community Church, 91 Savannah Lane — 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, 1 p.m. to

3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday; 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday,

1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 18; and 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 19.

The shoebox gifts are delivered to children affected by war, disease, disaster, poverty and famine.

The children who receive these boxes are selected by local volunteers from various evangelical denominations in partnership with a National Leadership Team from Samaritan’s Purse.


Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham.

Since 1993, the operation has collected and delivered more than 157 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries and territories.

Transgender event

PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County Transgender Support Group will present the documentary “Trans Youth” from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 20.

The free screening will be held at the Quimper Universalist Unitarian Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is an observance in memory of those who died due to anti-transgender violence.

This documentary centers on five transgender young adults navigating the exhilaration and disappointment of growing older in the southern city of Austin, Texas.

The film will be preceded by a candlelight vigil and followed by a discussion panel.

Chain gang busy in local communities

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Chain Gang brushed and cleared culverts on the Elwha Levee project during the weeks of Oct. 8-12 and Oct. 15-19.

Crew members found 11 illegal dump sites, one on Lower Elwha Road with 80 pounds of garbage, seven on Mount Pleasant Road with 17,360 pounds of garbage, one on Little River Road with 140 pounds of garbage and two on Deer Park Road with 200 pounds of garbage.

Crew members also dug four holes, set posts in them and put signs on the posts for Barb McFall of Code Enforcement.

Crew members cleaned two county lots at Dungeness Meadows.

Crew members also pulled weeds and spread mulch with Jennifer Chenoweth at the Carlsborg pump station.

Crew members pulled approximately 1200 Scotch broom plants at the Forks Pit.

Crew members filled potholes and washouts on Little River Road with the county road department.

Crew members hauled mulch from Kirner Pit to the Deer Park Rest Area for a planting project.

Crew members picked up and disposed of an elk hide and legs as well as a dead deer on Deer Park Road.

Crew members weeded the county right-of-way at the Carlsborg pump station.

Crew members also dug out a drain that was not working to prevent flooding of the roadway.

Notable items found along roadways were 12 needles, two mattresses, three box springs, a wood desk, four boats, two motor-homes and a fifth wheel.

The chain gang has so far this year cleaned 127.75 miles of roadway, picked up 6,840 pounds of roadside litter, picked up 89,650 pounds of dump site litter, recycled 743 pounds of aluminum, trimmed 19,104 feet of guardrail, removed or sprayed 37,860 Scotch broom plants and brushed 9.85 miles of county rights-of-way.


For the forest service, the chain gang has so far this year cleaned 10.5 miles of forest roads or trails; removed 12,610 pounds of dump site litter and removed 23 hazard trees.

Call for ornaments from kids

SEQUIM — The Sequim City Arts Advisory Commission invites fourth-grade or 9-year-old students to create ornaments to place on the city’s tree.

Students must live within the Sequim School District’s boundaries.

The tree will be on display from Dec. 7 through Jan. 1 at Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St.

The theme for the student-created ornaments is “Nature’s Creatures: Real or Mythical.”

Any materials are acceptable as long as they are dry, but no live entries, candles, batteries or flammable materials are allowed.

Ornaments can be no smaller than 2 inches by 2 inches by 2 inches and no larger than 6 inches by 6 inches by 6 inches.

All ornaments must be presented with a loop of wire, ribbon or cord for attachment of a hanging hook.

Ornaments should be delivered to Sequim Civic Center between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Nov. 26.

The Tree Lighting and Official Reception for student participants and their parents will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 7.

All ornaments will be returned in January.

City seeks tree

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a donation of a 30- to 35-foot-tall fir tree for the city’s downtown holiday celebration.

The tree, which must be accessible by vehicle, is needed no later than mid-November.

Donors will receive special recognition for helping with the annual tradition.

Each year a donated tree is placed at the Conrad Dyar Memorial Fountain at First and Laurel streets.

The Port Angeles Downtown Association will host the annual tree-lighting ceremony and festivities Nov. 24.

PORT TOWNSEND — Christmas for Children is accepting applications for families in need for Christmas, 2018.

Applications can be found at the Port Townsend and Tri-Area Food Banks, at the Port Townsend DSHS office and at www.christmas4children.com.

The deadline to sign up to receive gifts for this year is Thursday.

Christmas for Children provides families in need with something to put under the Christmas tree for their children.

Last year Christmas for Children, with the assistance of Toys for Tots, served 226 families and 565 children in Jefferson County.
