On Call Appointments

I will be working in a salon "By Appointmentl"....I am not sure how the scheduling works. Does the salon call me when there is an intrest or are the clients given my number to call me and schedule.. I have heard stories about appts cancelling and MT not getting the message or constant scheduling errors when salon front desk is making appts (usually because there are so many people at the front desk at times). At this time I will be the only MT there but owner is recruiting for another. And when the other MT is hired, is it best for us to have designated days? ALSO this is a new salon and the owner is trying to drum up business.....what are your thoughts on my being there a few hours a day for Walk-ins? (Owner will be window advertising massage available by appt and also website advertising)...Thanks in advance ! Gigglefishy

It's better to have set days/times IMO, especially if you are going to have to share the room. Is the salon providing the equipment?
Who gets called and who does the scheduling depends on the contract that you and the salon owner make up. My advice however is to put it all in writing so you know what your responsibilities are, and what theirs are.
Will you be an Independent Contractor or Employee?
Being there for walk-ins is good for a little while, lets you be seen at least, chat up those in the waiting area, etc.
But there does come a point, and it comes faster than you would think IMO, when the salon starts expecting you to be there for walk-ins all the time.
And quite frankly if you are by appointment only, the whole idea is that they actually need to make an appointment!

I started out at the salon i work at, by appointments like that..the hair-stylists made my appointments, and it was one problem after another..they would schedule wrong...not giving me enough time, and even an accidental "double-book" etc..and they dont screen calls for "questionable" clients, because they dont think about things like that..and I had to call in every day.."do i have anyone yet?" etc..it just ended up being a pain for me.. as far as walkins..that doesn't happen THAT much to be sitting at the salon, at least not at my salon. we have had walk-ins (very few) but I am never there when they show up :roll: and after the books kept getting messed up (and I do not blame the hair stylists) they are busy and doing the best they could...I started just keeping my own books, a client would call and they would direct their calls to my number..that worked out better, and it gives you more control of your day etc..but after a few years of that I decided to just have set hours, (and after 7 years i have decided this) and it has been the best decision yet....clients call my business phone and I have set hours and its working out so much better. Being on call is so hard sometimes..you never know what you have going in a day...this is all just my humble opinion and experience.

first, this is something you should ask the salon about. ask them what their expectations are. i do think it is a great idea for you to be there in case any walk-ins do show up. in the beginning it will suck but if you can stick it out, you'll be busy for it in the long run. be around. let people see you and get to know you. this WILL help you! it's important. good luck!

Thank you all for your advice! I am an Independent Contractor and will be making my own appts (thanks to you guys). The Salon owner,(a tanning salon) bought the table, shelving, and a moblie cart and we have agreed to a per client fee for now. I have only a few things in the room that are easily taken with me when I am not there. I am leaving my stool there.
I went in today and did "Free Chair Massage" for a couple of hours. It was a good turn out and hopefully I won a few new clients! I like the idea of having set days. Helps with my schedule. I work 3 days at an exclusive (very busy) spa in town. You know, you can burn out fast in that atmosphere! But it is guaranteed income for now!
