Lately I've been debating about bringing in some sort of retail to my office and was wondering if anyone had any experience with Personal Spa. They sell a variety of shaped marble stones that can be used around the face, on the neck/shoulders, or rolled on the bottoms of the feet/self-massage, etc. as a cold application.

I've seen a lot of posts from people who sell heat packs (rice/corn/flax etc.) but nothing about cold therapy. I'm just wondering if anyone has done this or something similar. I think for now I might buy a few to use in treatments to see how they incorporate and how I like them, otherwise there would be no point in selling them. I know there are mixed opinions on retail, but I'm open to suggestions as well.

We do not have a huge "retail" element to our business at all, but I have become more open to it as a sort of "residual" source of income. I do know one thing: If *I* don't use it (either in my practice or personally, at home), I refuse to sell it. I am not a good enough salesperson to be able to thrive at selling things I personally do not use and love. It feels like lying to me. So I'd definitely encourage you to get some and try them out before investing in a bunch to sell.

(And I do hear you about never hearing anyone talking about providing "cold therapy products for use at home". I, myself, far prefer cold therapy to hot therapy. Maybe we should work together to come up with some products of our own, and make our millions that way, haha!)

Ice packs would be cold therapy... and I think more useful than pretty stones.

In my opinion, Chattanooga Colpacs Cold Packs are the best. You can purchase them from Scrip, here. I love their Half Size: 7.5" x 11", but also have the neck contour, reg. size and oversize ones.

I also encourage cold therapy.
And while I have always used ice packs in the past, I picked up a large marble stone from Nature's Stones.

She says that the marble "draws out" the heat, rather than simply cooling the area.
And after using in myself, think that there might be something to that. I dunno.

You have to make sure that the material is marble and not sardonyx (what I was told anyway).
From their pictures it looks like some of the stones may not be marble - the one I notice especially is the headache/migraine one.
You can tell if it is very glossy and slick.

I agree that ice packs are probably more effective than stones but one of the reasons I'm looking at the stones is because when I recommend/encourage any type of cold therapy, people are put off because cold is uncomfortable and heat is nice and relaxing. My thinking is that a cool/cold stone is going to be less uncomfortable than ice or an ice pack and people just might be more willing to do it on their own. Yes, they are pretty, but they are meant to be kept in a refrigerator/freezer or on ice and marble supposedly retains the cold really well so I do see some benefit there rather than just aesthetics.

I do know this: We have a set of marble "cold stone therapy" stones for migraines, and man, are they effective! (So WHY don't I ever think to USE them when *I* have a migraine?????) They do "hold the cold" a lot longer than some other things. I personally have a "thing" for more natural rather than synthetic/"plastic" stuff, and so stones appeal to me more than "ice packs". My favorite at-home ice pack, though, is this clay (admittedly, encased in plastic) pack that I got at Wal mart, of all places. It just feels more.... natural, and soothing, and comfortable to me. Maybe it's emotional/"all in my head", but thereyahaveit. People will get out of stuff whatever they *perceive* they will get out of it. Does a "corn bag" really heat/treat better than a chemical hot pack? I dunno, but I'd sure prefer the corn bag over the chemical one any day of the week. (By the way, those corn/rice bags can also be stored in the freezer and used for cold therapy.....)

I use a flax pillow that I keep in the freezer and it is DIVINE! Just the right amount of cold comes off it and it lasts quite a while. I make my own so I have different shapes. They also have to be kept in a ziplock back to make sure they don't absorb moisture or other odors.

I won a deluxe set of stones at the raffle drawing for the regional conference here in New England. they are different than your other stones. I've never done stones before so this is new and interesting to me. These stones are made of soapstone and apparently hold the heat and/or cold for much longer. They are cylinders made by hand by these 2 women, one from virginia and the other from NY. They call the stones Core Stones. I'm excited to play around with them. Unfortunately they are so new they don't have a website yet, but I can let you know as soon as they do. The cylinders come in different lengths for use in different areas and are designed well to not stress the wrists during use.

Yes, I've got experience with the Personal Spa line.
The white eye half moons are amazing, the face cheek stones are very good. The pink puffy eye stones I think are more use for face massage by therapist than use by the client, BUT I've found people seem to either like the white eye stones OR the pink ones, even though I'm a white eye stone fan, still not convinced about the head ache relief stones (maybe I have a fat neck), the roller stones are great, they can be used behind the neck and can be used almost anywhere else. I think that's the full line.... white eye moon, pink puffy eye, cheek, roller, head ache relief.... http://www.personalspashop.com

Marble is a much harder than soapstone and will hold the cold longer.
But they look like interesting products!

And it is certainly relevant to the discussion.

A client told me about this ice pack and swears by it. She claims the cold goes deeper than a regular ice pack
