pizza box flyer

So I went to pick up my pizza last night and taped to the box was a flyer from a local dog grooming place. It had list of services, contact info, and a coupon. I thought this was a great idea. Think about how many people will pick up a pizza and will see that ad. I’m wondering if it would work for my business…..or if people will think it’s cheesy (no pun intended LOL). I might call the pizza place and ask if they charge to do this or if they would consider bartering. What do you guys think of this??

I think people that order pizza would probably be more interested in dog grooming, pest control, ironing services than massage. Maybe you are in an upmarket pizza area, but I'm assuming it's a family area with lots of dogs, or apartments with high maintenance small dogs (for the dog grooming flyers to be a success, or else the dog groomer is a member of the family). If your local pizza place has mainly students as its customers, I doubt dog groomers, pest control, ironing services or massage would get much interest. Just think about the demographic that your local pizza place caters for. Is there much cross over with the demographic you are interested in?

Even though massage shouldn't be a luxury, most people do consider it a luxury, and it's usually the discretionary income that is spent on massage.

I see your point melb, but if one were to get a good deal on advertising this way, it couldn't hurt to try it out.

If you bartered massage for advertising with the owner of the business, you would have the possibility of that person becoming a regular and/or referring friends and family to you. I think if maybe there was some sort of coupon or introductory massage offer on the flyer, you may be more likely to get some business.

There is no harm advertising as much as you can, if you can afford it - either because you've got a good deal, do it yourself or have a lot of money behind you.
If there are limited advertising funds, you've got to figure out if that is the best way to advertise to likely clients, you've got to figure out your likely clients and direct marketing to them.

I'd wait a few weeks and contact the dog groomer to find out about the response from the pizza flyers, though the dog groomer might be doing such a blanket advertising blitz that the pizza flyer results can't be isolated.

I also have visions of guys with beer and poker nights/football/whatever getting the pizza and deciding a massage would be a great idea, nudge nudge, leading to slurry phone calls at all pizza delivery hours. If harley has an office phone number where phone calls at all hours are not an issue, that's not a problem, if it's the home phone or own cell phone number, it might not be appreciated.

Melb, I totally see your point and I appreciate your honesty. I ran it by my husband and he agrees with you. But thinks it is a good idea for other business like the dog groomer. I think a massage flyer would do a lot better in an upscale coffee house or restaurant.

How about those envelopes of ads and coupons that come in the mail? I don't know the cost, but the ads come in different sizes, so I'm sure some are less expensive than others.

I thought about that too Gessika. Around here they are expensive and I have taken a poll from friends and family and was shocked by how many never even open those things and just threw them away. I was intrigued by the pizza flyer because it wouldn't cost much at all.

well i think it's a great idea! i guess it does depend on the neighborhood they deliver too but don't read too much into the comments here....normal people have pizza delivered. they are not all scum bags and drunken idiots that get their food delivered. how about little caesar's and their $5 deal? do you have one your area? we have them everywhere here and i know the one by my house puts out a HUGE amount of business with that offer.

offer to paste the flyers on the boxes yourself. i can't imagine that a manager/owner of a pizza place would charge you much if at all for sending out flyers on their boxes....especially if you offered to glue them on that way they wouldn't do any of the work.

i say check it out. it's worth a shot.

ps. i too throw out the ads in the mail without opening the envelope...and it's pretty expensive.

I have actually advertised with flyers on pizza boxes (my husband is the regional supervisor for a large franchise). I found that having the flyers sent out with boxes during lunch time was very successful. There are a lot of office workers and hospital employees who order pizza during the day time hours. FYI: I live in a small town and the pizza place delivers everywhere in the city.

Having been a Dominos Pizza manager in the 80's I can tell you that every box has a box topper on it.(or someone is not doing their job)
I doubt (but ask anyhow...from reading the above post) that a National chain will allow you to put your flier on the boxes. If you local chains are franchised and not corporate stores you may have luck there.
If they are corporate stores you'd be better off going to the local mom and pop pizza joint.
They will expect something in return such as you handing out their coupons/magnets/menu.
Win win when you can find the place to partner with.
Back in the 80's before Blockbuster was everywhere we swapped fliers with local video stores. Later on in the 80's DP made a deal with Blockbuster and they had exclusivity.
Again, if they are franchised they may work with you.

I am just wondering if the people who are looking for $5 pizza deals are going to want to shell out $50+ for massage therapy.

It could just be that I am going through the snob phase of building my business....only wanting certain types....being irritated with deal seekers....

absolutely they are willing to shell out money!!! it's not the deal that they're looking for...it's that they can walk in and 10 seconds later walk out with a pizza in their hand. it's convenience, not price that makes this deal so great!

we get a pizza about once a week like this. everyone in our neighborhood does too (and at my daughter's school) and we live in an upper middle class area. they've got plenty of $ to get a massage.

Again, from my experience, it is not only the more meager earners who get pizza delivered.
There will be deal seekers all over the place. I don't mind them unless they come in clusters(which the phone deal seekers always seem to do).
Yes, I know what I'm worth, I know what it took ($$) for my education but at times I do not mind offering the deal. If the "deal" gets them through the door...then they have a chance to know what a good massage is like....they may shifft their priorities and not get that daily frappy at *bucks, or the new purse etc. to come in for the massage monthly.
