Question about cats newly introduced living in a small space..?

I just moved in with my friend Emily, we each have a cat, and she also has a bunny.
The bunny cage and two litter boxes are both in the storage closet that we have, and lately the smell has been absolutely unbearable! it smells like ammonia, but not like regular cat urine ammonia, it's soooo much worse!
at first we figured the cats were peeing in the bunny's cage, but then we heard that the cats could be secreteing something into each other's litter boxes because they are territorial..

is there anyway to prevent this or mask the smell or anything?! I am afraid to even open the door!

-and gosh no! we don't keep our cats in the closet!! that's just where the litter boxes are! there is a pet door in the big door so they can go in and out!!

Cats ARE territorial and these guys might not like having to share such close quarters to use the bathroom. Would it be possible to separate the two litter boxes - one in the storage closet and one in a bathroom or a linen closet or something?

Keeping the boxes scrupulously clean is also important - you may have to scoop them a couple times a day.

ETA: I would recommend a couple things.

First, clean the litter boxes more often. The longer cat urine sits the worse it smells.

Second, look into Feliway plugins or Rescue Remedy to reduce the cats' anxiety. Cats don't respond well to change, especially when it involves a new feline roommate, and they are probably both a little stressed out right now.

you keep your cats in the closet??? What??? that is terrible!!

Okay, I see!! I just wasn't sure! Umm, maybe they don't like the rabbit cage in there? Thats all I can think of, or maybe the little boxes aren't getting cleaned enough for them?
