Rate by the Minute

Hi all

There is a new massage business in my town operating from a fitness/lifestyle centre that has just opened. A friend called the MT & asked what was their hourly rate. Her response was something like........'It's a $dollar a minute...Is that OK with you'?

I was rather gobsmacked I've never heard any massage business market themselves like that. What does that mean? Do they start the stopwatch as soon as you get in the door & you clock off when you leave & pay accordingly? Sounds a bit stressful to me for both the MT & the client. What do you guys think?

Ah, yes...pricing schemes for those who are too lazy to do math.

The $1/minute mentality seems to be more prevelant in the chair massage industry. Never seen table massage offered on a per minute basis.

Maybe they have 30 and 60 min sessions only, but advertise the price that way to make it seem more palatable.

It might mean the client can choose odd lengths of massage - 40 minutes vs. just the 30 & 60 normally offered, etc. I've seen it many times - could be geographic.

So, I walk in with $12.00 and ask for 12 minutes of work. : I imagine that yes, the therapist would watch the clock. Don't most of us have to watch the clock anyways?

It's a weird way to sell massage time for sure.

I don't know, maybe they don't take walk ins. Maybe they have a chair and a table and under a certain amount of time will only use the chair? Who knows??

What happens with taking client medical history & assessment etc??? That can amount to 5-10 mins easily. Is a $/min for on the table time only? They do offer chair massage but also swedish, deep tissue, shiatsu, lymphatic drainage, reflexology & bowen therapy. It will be interesting to see how they go.

What I have seen is table time only. It's also not nervously timed...but amount of time scheduled. Just like everything else I see around here. Schedule a 30 min, or a 50 min, or a 75 min.....and then the scheduler knows not to book another until 15 (or 30 at one place) minutes after that was to end.
