Reflexology tutor qualification

Hi

I was wondering how students and reflexologists would feel if their practitioner level reflexology course which is acreditted by the AOR had been qualified three months when starting teaching the course....

My concerns are for the students with lack of clinical experience to draw upon.

No teaching qualification before starting the course

Making a mockery of the profession if colleges are getting in newly qualified reflexologists to teach new practitioners.

AOR states that a teacher on a course must have 5 years clinical experience and a teaching qualification and an assistant 3 years clinical and teaching qualification. 3 months is no where near!!!!

I did speak to AOR in October but she is still teaching!

I would be interested in hearing your comments.

i know someone who is teaching on an AOR reflexology course with only three months post qualifying experience when she got the job teaching reflexology at practitioner level for an AOR acredited course. No experience and no teaching qualification prior to starting job

I am very concerned for both credability of the course and worry for the students as i personally would be horrified to find out my teacher had so little experience. Also about this could reflect on the profession as a whole at this time where credible training is at the forefront

I have to say this would worry me a lot and I would find a different tutor.

Part of the training is dealing with things that crop up which can only be learned/taught through experience and it wouldn't inspire confidence in me if I thought my tutor was unlikely to have much experience her/himself

Assuming that the tutor has only be qualified for 3 months, and didn't have a different type of reflex qual from years ago you don't know about, I would say that this is an outrage. I'm so glad that I didn't renew my AoR membership last year.

I would suggest writing to AoR and asking some questions. If the letter only asks questions and doesn't make any accusations then you will have the full facts of the situation and can then decide whether to make a formal complaint based on the answers received from AoR.

Most associations cannot take action on phone calls of complaint but if asked questions, in writing, will fully investigate the situation in order to reply to the questions. That investigation would hopefully uncover any anomalies whether due to the actions of the training provider or AoR.

I think that's awful. I'm very surprised the AoR aren't more interested. Did you raise it with them formally?

AoR accredited schools have to complete an annual accreditation form stating who their tutors are and including copies of their certificates. When a new tutor joins a school, the school has to complete a new tutor form which again has to be accompanied with the tutor's relevant certificates. I would expect the school to lose their accreditation if they have not followed the rules.

I agree with Typical, you need to write to the AoR and give them a list of questions to respond to.

I did bring it up with them on the phone but not had the time to write it down formally. I do intend to however I thought it would be useful to obtain opinions from others here as well as CThA. I have not put it on the AOR forum as I wanted to get external views first...

It doesn't surprise me to be honest!

when I was on my ITEC reflexology course, 2 people were on it who were already qualified to IIHHT level, when asked why they were on the course, they said that the "Tutor" was teaching the course whilst attending a reflexology course himself. He was about 4 lessons ahead of what he was teaching!

I certainly wouldn't be happy If I was paying the huge amounts of money students pay to take this course! What a rip off! How can someone who has only recently qualified themselves possibly have the experience to teach?? I don't agree with it.

I've just read your post and am appalled to hear about this. I am a Fellow of the AoR, and a tutor, and can only say that the standards are normally vigorously adhered to.

If the AoR still hasn't done anything, please would you pm me with details about this tutor and I will take the matter up.

Just read this post,this can in no way be correct.Our tutor said you have to be at least 5 years working as a praticioner before doing the tutor course.This may seem a bit long but just imagine the experience and I must say she was brilliant.Also Im wondering if you have any information on this,Im quallified since Nov. 2009 but I would in no way have the expertiese to teach.I think you should contact AOR as Im sure there is something wrong here.Let us know how you get on.

Apparently she is no longer teaching and now the AOR said that the college is not AOR accredited despite giving that impression on their website...

Sorry guys - I thought healthypages would e-mail me when a PM came though (like they do when someone posts on the forum). I now know they dont . It must look like I'd gone very quiet!

Ccole - I've now got your PM and have spoken with the AoR. I have PM'd you back with some preliminary information - the main jist of which is that the school you mention isn't an AoR accredited centre - so they couldn't offer AoR training anyway. There is some more information to come - just wanting to get my facts straight before I post anything publicly.

Oh deary me,
Heres my two pence worth,
I have been studying complementary therapy for almost five years and i would never say its the qualifactions that makes a good teacher?! Ive had good and not so good tutors over the years. I have also been offered to become a teacher/tutor, however for me i felt that i hadnt had enough experience. It takes alot to get up and teach, but if someone wonts to have a go...then why not?
Who are we to say who should be a teacher or not? Are we all not teachers in our own right?
What about life experiences? Does that not count for anything?

I'm not a reflexologist so have no axe to grind here, but I don't see the logic in Hallos' post above. Never mind if the person is a good teacher per se, the concern is that having qualified such a short time ago she will have very little practical experience. With any newly learned discipline, it takes a while (surely?) before one becomes totally accustomed to putting it into practice.
