I am just starting massage school and my original plan was to go back to school for nursing after massage school. However, I have become so enthusiastic about massage and natural healing that I don't find myself excited about nursing anymore. I would love to make massage my main career but I want to make sure that I will be setting myself up for success and be able to make a comfortable living. Does anyone have any advice or input on how I can do so? I just need to know that massage won't be a dead end for me.

Massage therapy as any other career Is what you make of it. Cultivate your career as a M.T. by prioritizing what massage modality you excel with, and then become the expert of those modalities. To be successful as a M.T. is to cater your business to people who want your expertise, which are you modalities! To survive in the business world, specifically massage therapy is to market your business with an expert approach to show your clients you're knowledgeable, wise, and deliver a service worth having! That's how doctors and lawyers keep clients, right?

Continue to learn as a student. Believe me, there's a lot out there awaiting you. I know, because I am a M.T. student also.

I would suggest that while you are in school mode, you continue down that path. I have found that it is very hard to jump back into school, once you have quit for a while. My opinion is that it is better to just knock out about 8 or so years of education in whatever fields you like while you are young (if you can afford it, or can use one field to keep you afloat while learning a second one). You never know what life will throw in your path, so having two options in the health care related fields instead of one can be useful.

Building a private massage practice is very hard work. And, working for other people can be equally difficult. If you enjoy it, it can be worth it, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will be easy (at least in my experience). Here is a response I recently wrote for someone regarding some of my journey.
