Is anyone concerned about this? What, if anything, are you going to be doing differently?

We always practice universal precautions, but news reports are saying not to get close to people (kiss, hug, shake hands). Since our work is touching, how are you going to cut down your chances of contracting this disease?

From everything I have read, the most inportant question to ask is if they have been to Mexico recently or have had contact with someone who has been to Mexico. There is a nice Q and A in the USA Today paper that I would imagine is staying there for awhile.

I am not concerned. IF anyone feels ill they shouldn't get massage regardless of swine flu.

HOWEVER, I am going on vacation, leaving Friday for FL then off on a cruise Saturday. Our itinerary is changing (no Mexican ports) but when I get back, or maybe prior, I will send a notice to my clients for the first week and let them know I have traveled and while NOT to Mexico.... the travel alone might disturb some. This way, they have time to consider if they want to come for the session or not.

I would feel horrible if I was carrying something and passed it to clients.

So just wash wash wash hands!

so this is more political than i care to be on a forum, but since opinions were sought....

i am NOT concerned about 'swine flu.' i'm concerned about what they've been putting in flu shots/vax. there's only some 200+ confirmed cases world-wide, meanwhile some 14k people have died since january this year from regular ol' influenza in the US alone (these numbers are unresearched by me, it is very much third hand). i have a SEVERE distrust of big pharma and big politics, especially with the politics looking more and more like gearing up for the New World Order.

i'm concerned about the loss of personal and civil liberties as well. i think this has NOTHING to do with this strain of flu itself...i think it's being propoganda'd for a specific purpose.

and i'm not trying to fear-monger in the opposite direction...these are MY concerns regarding the 'pandemic' at hand, and my opinions as well.

Swine Flu Concerns

A client came in with her 17yo daughter this afternoon and mentioned that the entire school system in the neighboring larger town has been closed for all of next week. This morning, I was told by someone "in" with the *local* small-town school in our own town that they were still holding classes, but they've shut down all after-school/extracurricular activities for the next couple of weeks. I don't know when the complete shutdown of the larger school district was called, and I don't know whether the local schools have decided to close too. This is getting *weird*!

For ourselves, I've just told my 91yo grandmother that we won't be going to church for the next few weeks, until I can feel reasonably certain that there's no more danger to either of us (elderly and pregnant- fantastic combination to have out-and-about in any sort of harsh circumstances, eh? LOL!) She's terribly disappointed, but I put my foot down and told her that I need to protect myself and my baby, as well as her. We won't close down the business unless there's obvious reason to. It's easy enough to ascertain on a case-by-case basis; we never have more than two or three "extra people" in the office at a time. And hubby loves his Lysol!

Swine Flu Concerns

I'm not concerned about it at all. Our local health commissioner stated Saturday [5/2/09] that there haven't even been any individuals reporting feeling flu-like symptoms to their family docs or the local hospital. I take the appropriate health precautions with my clients, and, none of them have had travel plans to outside the country anywhere other than Japan [6 months ago.]

Unless the entire county suddenly gets up one morning and decides to take trips to places where there are definite cases of swine/h1ni flu present and then are coughed and sneezed upon by individuals in contact with flu patients, and then return home and book with me, I'm not going to worry about it. It's just one more thing to worry unnecessarily if it isn't present in my area.....

I have to admit, I am not so concerned. I also believe there is more of a "political" something-or-other going on here. Not sure where it's actually coming from... but it sure feels of "more than meets the eye".

I'm not at all concerned about Swine Flu. Like others have said in this & other threads, thousands of people (who are already in poor health) die every year from all kinds of flu. Why is the swine flu being singled out?

Here are some US death statistics to give a little perspective:

43,000 die annually in car accidents
1,300 die falling down the stairs
73 die annually by lightning strike
0 have died from the swine flu in the US (and only 26 nationwide). This is not a pandemic.

Are you going to stop driving or taking the stairs? Because the risk of death through those endeavors is exponentially greater. The best thing you can do for your health is stop listening to the news. The news sells fear, not facts.

I tend to agree with everyone, generally, but because we are in such close contact with people, we are more at risk than the average person and more likely to contract this, and any flu or cold for that matter.

Practicing universal precautions and maintaining a healthy immune system, along with getting immunized where appropriate, is about all we can do. I feel less concerned now than I did when I initially posted this.

I think that nails it quite well. The fact is that this 'pandemic' is not put into perspective AT ALL. I think it is ridiculous. I'm doing what I do all the time to avoid the little nasties. Wash hands, practice good hygiene, ect.

IF the government wanted things to calm down, those other factoids would be posted to the news post haste and none of this would be an issue any more than it ever is during 'flu season'. No one ever wants to get the flu, even if it has some new flourish to the name.

Now, when reports of the Ebola virus start, then I'll worry.

Swine Flu Concerns

Just wanted to add a perspective from Mexico. As you may know, the initial numbers reported were not confirmed cases. Apparently there seems to be as much swine flu in the US as in Mexico. The deaths far fewer than with "normal" flu.

The economy of Mexico has been severely affected, especially in areas such as Cozumel where cruiseship visits account for much of the income. Hotels are nearly empty. I am delighted to report I have ONE tourist massage appointment on Friday, and 90 minutes at that! Who knows when the next one will be. Fortunately I also have local clients. Unfortunately they have little money for massage right now. Fortunately those who do have money are quite stressed right now and are turning to me at this time, so I will survive. Others are not so lucky.

Many are out of work, despondent. We know this will all change with time. It's a day by day process. We compare this to being hit by a hurricane, without the damage to flora and reef system. I have encouraged my scuba clients to come and enjoy their favorite sport without the normal crowds. It is wonderfully peaceful here. A little too peaceful.

Before anyone jumps on me for encouraging people to come to Mexico, there is not one confirmed case of swine flu in the entire state. You probably have more swine flu in your state than in mine. It's very much politics; I won't go there.
