I started work for a chiropracter a month ago.  For the first 2 weeks it was great...he charged me no rent or perceneforum.xxxe.  Well the arrangment was the client pays me half of the massage up front..then doc reimbuses me the other half when the insurance check comes in.  Which was fine.  However, he decided that the clients he refers to me only pay for half and half is all i get.  Now he wants me to refer all my clients to him, they pay me the full amount the first visit, then they become his patient and the next time I only get half.  I'm there 40 hours a week...he asked me about putting me on payroll and the amount i would be thinking off.  I said $12 an hour and he flipped out....so i said $10 per hour, train me as a tech, 40 hours a week.  He told me to go work at burger king.  I just really need to know the best way to handle this...I'm ready to move on.

آ With that kind of sarcastic remark he made about "working at Burger King", you know right then to just tell him it's not working out and leave it at that, there's no sense starting a spitting contest. (as we say in the South!) آ That kind of unfair treatment will not just stop and it is obvious you can't discuss things with him as an adult, so I would just count my losses and move on.  Your experience is a good example of why its so important to have a contact whether you are an employee or an independent contractor. آ The positive side to these experiences are that you will be able to recognize whether a future employement will be worth your time somewhere else. آ

If you're ready to move on, start finding another location now. Make sure to give him 2 weeks notice to keep everything on a professional level, and leave. No sense staying if you're already prepared to move on, and it doesn't seem like you're in a great position working there. I'd say good ridance.

Chalk the whole experience up to lessons learned.  First one would be to get your next agreement in writing.  Sometimes we don't like to do that because it seems like we don't trust the person's word.  Well, sometimes you just can't.  Anyone who is a business person will understand that it's just good business.  Obviously, this chiropractor doesn't value your professional status or he would not have made the comment about working at Burger King.  That was very unprofessional and you'd do best to cut your ties with someone who is not professional.  The best way to handle it as has been suggested here already is to give your two weeks notice.  Don't get into a "spitting contest" (I love that Kathryn).  Be professional and just move on and chalk it all up to a learning experience.  Good luck.

There is absolutely no way I would want to be on this chiro's payroll if after less than one month he has renegged on his part of the agreement.  $12/hour is peanuts for massage therapy work!  Think about your tuition costs and divide it by $12 to see how many hours you will have to work to pay off your educational investment.  At least at Burger King you have a possibility of moving into management. :I agree with the above posts that it is time to start looking elsewhere.Plus, I would give him a statement listing the clients for which he still owes you payment and follow it up with a copy via certified mail so you have a papertrail/evidence which will allow you to write it off on your taxes as bad debts should you not be compensated.

You are definitely being taken advanneforum.xxxe of!!!  You are working for $10 an hour !?!!!  I make more than that at the bagel shop that I am currently at... and what I'm making still isn't enough to live on...comfortably.  I recommend you scope out your town/city and see what other MTs are charging.  Then you will have a good idea of the going rates.  Good luck to you!!

Sorry you had to be insulted like that.  Does he treat his patients like he treats you?  Then he won't be in business very long anyway.  It is probably tempting to forgo the two weeks notice, but you'll have to be the professional one here and take the high road.  Good luck in finding a place where you are seen as a professional and treated with respect you deserve!

I can relate oh too well. Some chiropractors are just not massage therapist friendly. They only use you to draw patients in. And they act like they are doing you a favor by letting you work for them.Chiropractic and Massage go hand in hand. However, I would advise you to find a chiropractor that will rent you a room and keep your business completely separate from his. You refer to him, he refers to you... you stay on level ground.-Melody

If I were you, I would rent a room from a chiropractor's suite as an Independent Contractor, not as an  employee. This gives you much more freedoms for income and much more control over your hours of employment.Be well,Jen

wow, it sounds like this guy has no respect for MT's.  He seems to want to use you as a free or cheap marketing tool to build his clientele instead of having massage because he really believes it is a useful tool to help with healing.  I would just leave that situation if it were me.  Yuck!  Do you really want to spend your time in this kind of enviornment?  Is this why you wanted to be a massage therapist?

You could, possibly, hold him to what he originally agreed to pay you.  A verbal contract is binding.  Call your local bar association, they should offer free help, and ask them if there is anything you can do. So sad that a person like that became a doctor. Sad.

WOW !! Do I have experience with this situation.  The first chiropractor I worked for wanted me to get out (go business to business) and promote his practice, with no additional $$ for my part.  Also, I learned that he was introuble and living at his office.  I worked there less than one month.  (I live in a very small town) He was not in business for much longer.Chiropractor #2- He and his father in law had built a nice size business.  (When I came in the father in law had been retired for a few years). First-He wanted me to give away my massages for a while.  Well, I was suppling all of my equipment, washing all sheets, towels, etc.  But I would give one away here and there, as you all know that never provides future clients.  He argued that.  But I did point out that the ones I gave away never came back.  Then he and his wife left for an England vacation, one month long.  He did not even have a chiropractor come in and sub for him.  When I first started work they asked that I sign a contract, which I was glad to do so.  (Just to let you know, a written contract is only as good as their word) So later he sold his business to another chiropractor and told the Dr. to come in and just take it over (even though paperwork for the sale was not complete).  Evidently, he and his wife kept a key to the business.  After closing hours they would let themselves in and download all of what the new Dr.  (and me) had done that day then file it with the insurance companies and collect the $$.  Well, if that was not enough they would not even pay me for work I had done before the sale.  So since I had a contract I took it to an attorney. Which of course said "good luck on collecting."  So I went ahead to court and they were no shows, SURPRISE !!  I won but never was paid.  The chiropractor filed for Bankruptcy.  By the way, they were the same age as I was which was 29.  Just to add a little note...after the new chiropractor took over he kept me employed and I was cleaning out some old files.  I found an application to a business for advertising that the previous dr. had filled out.  There was a question that asked....Have you ever filed for bankruptcy and it was filled in .....Yes.  So here they were at 29 filing for bankruptcy again.  Also, I went to the workforce to find out if he could be held responsible and since I was contract labor (paid my own taxes) there was nothing that could be done.Needless to say, I will never work for another one.Cassandra
