"Teaching" Massage for Community Education

Has anyone here ever taught a class on massage to the public in a community ed type situation?

1. What aspects of massage did you cover (self massge, couples)?

2. How did you structure the class (lecture, hands on)?

3. What equipment did you use?

4. Did you have any handouts or freebies for those attending?

5. Did teaching the class help you at all in promoting your practice?

6. Do you feel this is an effective way to help educate the public about massage?


Any online resources on how to do it would be very helpful, thanks.

You ask the best questions! I've not taught a class, but I've attended a few, and wanted to attend a few more. My school teaches an infant massage class, I don't know if they have a supply fee or not for that one. The classs where they teach a aromatherapy facial they charge a hefty fee plus require attendees to bring sheets towels, etc.

I attended a NMT class, it only cost $5, held at the therapists location. He did a brief talk about the modality, then did a brief demo on everyone...there were only 3 of us there. He does this course often, and I do think it is a good way to promote your business. He's listed in the CommEd books...name and businessname, location, etc. He gets new people in the door, in short, I think it should work.

I also took a Reike commed class. She had some handouts. She had postponed the class for a couple weeks, and that might have hurt attendance. Still, there were 5-6 of us. She uses it to promote her business, her teaching business, etc. She did a little "hands on", sent some reike energy to each of us. We did a little QiGong to start the energy, too.

All others in the classes were general public. Advertisment was through the commed program, catalogs are mailed out to those that have taken classes, maybe everyone, don't know for sure how many go out. CommEd people seem to be more in our target market, really.

I do it for two reasons, one is to impress upon people the importance of touch and taking time to give and focus on the ones they love. The other reason is to promote my practice. In these sessions people have a chance to get to know me a little and feel more comfortable with me. They also find out how educated I am on massage and their confidence builds.

I will sometimes use handouts with basic information about how to make the session more enjoyable like lowering the lights, putting on music, getting comfortable, taking deep breaths, etc. I express the value of all this even if all they are doing is someone's hands.

In these sessions, I will only go over basic things, like the face, scalp, hands and feet. I give them just enough for them to help other people relax a little bit, but not so much that they feel they can do massage.

I will usually have a drawing for a free 30 minute massage. This is the way I gather names for my mailing list too. Of course, I make sure everyone leaves with my brochure and business card. I will sometimes have a drawing for a free CD too. It helps with attendance.

You can conduct these little sessions just about anywhere. Maybe at a ladies workout center or a social group for Moms or newcomers. You can even do it at an office. When I go to an office, I will generally concentrate on self massage and stretching in the workplace so they can get some relief from their stressfu workday.
