Listened to a podcast about how to get tested for sexually transmitted disease.

I’ve never been tested. Wondered / worried if I picked up anything - some STDs are asymptomatic.

So I googled the topic and found a way to get in touch with an online doctor-prescribed test. He is based in the GTA.

After a brief online interview via online text I got the test requisition I wanted : Gonorrhea, HIV, syphilis, hep C
The requisition gets faxed to a local lab of my choice. It can also be printed out and taken to an alternate lab if I chose.

Next I scheduled a visit to the local lab.
I used LifeLabs. Piss and blood test combo took five minutes. The lab sent my results directly to the requisitioning doctor.

Next I got notified by email to log into the website to get the detailed lab results that were uploaded by the doctor.

Took just 1 day for the urine test result.
On the 2nd day I got my blood test results.

Fortunately tested negative on everything.

Yes ..it's hassle free. I was there yesterday. They didin't ask much. All they asked was my name and my phone number so they can keep a record for me. Same as 66 Gerrard st E.

The issue with this option is that your results are stored in a central repository accessible with your permission (I think) by any health care professional. So your GP may get the results if he/she searches for info on you.

The City of Toronto's public health has a very good option for STI testing if you are concerned about your personal information being exposed to your GP. I am a Westend boy and know of clinics near YorkU, Rexdale, Etobicoke and Downsview. Google City or Toronto Public Health.

You book a call with a nurse practitioner where she screens you and emails the forms for you to take to any lab. I typically say that I am sexually active with multiple female partners. No one needs to know I am banging hookers or getting blown by MPAs. There is no judgement whatsoever. The results are sent directly back to her and she calls with the results.

HEAR IS THE CATCH IF YOU WISH TO LIMIT RECORDS.... If pay out of pocket for your tests, you don't need to provide your health card number and thus the results are not filed by the health care systems and won't accessible by any doctor. Basically only the health care practioner gets it. If you test positive, she can write the script and ask if you contacted those who may be at risk. If so, case closed.

You do need to provide the nurse with your name and Dob as they ask for this to confirm it is you. If you want, create a fake name if you wish as she doesn't ask for government ID.

They are very discreet calling from a private number and always ask if you can speak freely.

My last test cost me $7.50. If meds are needed, I pay out of pocket as well. Everything cash. I go quarterly and for $30/year it is a good piece of mind.

PS, Hiv testing can be 100% anonymous as well. This is a throwback to the early days of the aids scare. But you need to go to the clinic for that test.

Hope this helps as an alternative. Whatever you do, just do something to keep yourself and those you may share a life with safe and healthy.

Is it normal to get full STI urine test back in 1 day? I did one and keep getting told it takes minimum 3 business days but closer to 5-7 for them to grow the cultures at the lab to test.

Saw conflicting info on this. I think telestat is 1 to 2 days. Personal experience is about 5 days.

Teletest still makes you go to a life labs, same place you would have got tested if you went to your family doctor.

So I can’t remember the last time I was at a lifelabs do they ask for ID? I am guessing if I use teletest I wont be using my real info.

Teletest still makes you go to a life labs, same place you would have got tested if you went to your family doctor.

As long as life labs doesnt ask for heath card/ID who cares? They give you like a password to see your results on their website tell them your name is Mclovin as long as they dont have anything to check with

Well a few reasons

1. If they communicate the information to health canada

2. It wont work if you use a fake name and then provide a real name. Like if the secretary at life labs booked an appointment for say bob but you show up and present an id that says mike there us no chance you’re getting that test done

Last time I used Teletest I got the urine test back the next day and the blood work in 2 days.

Urine test including gonn/chlamydia? I've heard from multiple doctors that those cultures have to be grown and that's like a 3-5 day process. Just want to be sure before I start wasting my money.

As stated above, teletest still uses lifelabs. If you were to go to a doctor to get req for same test, you'll still likely be going to a life labs.

I recall getting some tests a few days after, not next day

Regardless of labs, Life Lab or other, if you pay for the test yourself, there is no requirement to file your results with the central repository because you paid for it. The results go to the individual on your lab form. If you use your health card, they need to validate for payment and will file your results. Again if you wish to fly under the radar, cash is king.

I have a thread here about my recent experience which you might want to read.

With TeleTest (which I used because I was travelling) you have a couple of options. You identify yourself with your OHIP number and the testing is free (You pay the TeleTest fee of $39). But, if you want to be anonymous, you simply decline to give that info up, and you pay the lab for the tests. $79 rings a bell)

I think there is also an option for semi-anonymity.... I forget the details, but basically OHIP covers it and it shows up in your "account" but your Doctor would literally need to search for that test, with that number, but no name.

I was at my family doctor last week and I'm really quit certain the results aren't sent to them. They would be in your provincial health care file, but your family doctor isn't your doctor... the TeleTest Doctor is... so he gets the results.

Anyway, it worked for me and I will use them again.
