Temporal headaches

hi, I have client coming later who suffers with temporal headaches. He has been investigated for 4 years at Kings, and has nothing worse such as brain tumour etc. His doctor completely hates reflexology and when he asked about it a few weeks ago was sneering, so no point going for permission. Client says he really wants the treatment and will sign disclaimer but doesn't think he needs doc permission anyway as all checked out and "just headaches". he does long shifts and so is permanently stressed and tired anyway. This sounds like a case study!!! Sorry!
I just wanted any advice if you have treated someone with this, as to any special reflexes? I am off to go through all my books too. I have ideas but want to check out with you more experienced therapists so I don't make it worse for him.

Im not a reflexologist, but, I'd be asking him if he grinds his teeth. I've found that the massetter muscles can send tension into the temporal muscle. Therefore I'd be looking at any reflexes for the jaw, face, ears and neck.

Thank you for that. Great thinking. I asked him and he says he doesn't but probably does in his sleep!!
He LOVED the treatment. I called today to see how he was and said his headache cleared and would usually last up to 4 weeks. Also he blew his nose for the first time in years!! (The strange things people get happy about!)
He is already looking forward to coming next week and is telling his family and friends how good reflexology is, so thats good for us all.
Incidentally, I had a rotten headache last night and was messing with the masseter muscle as you had flagged it up (and I DO grind my teeth!) and found that grimacing made it worse and smiling lessened it So thanks from me too!

Glad to hear it was valuable info. The massetters are very very strong for such a small muscle, after all you can bite someone's finger off should you have the need too. I've found that night teeth grinding can be the source of many a headache and neck ache without the person realising it. When ever some one comes to me for neck or headaches I ALWAYS check if they grind their teeth both day and night. Even clenching the jaw can have a profound effect on the surrounding muscles.

Working on the liver meridian against the energy flow (lv3 - lv1) is very effect for temporal headaches. Working the reflex for the TMJ is very relaxing for those clients who grind their teeth or clench their jaw when tense.

"What is TMJ?"
Also, I have never heard of liver meridians. I am worried now.
I know the liver reflex obviously, but are meridians from accupressure?

Hi Melsy,

Great that you had such positive feedback from your client. It sounds like you covered all the areas to enable him to begin the healing process.

Often we underestimate how fantastic reflexology is at allowing someone to simply just take time out for themselves from their busy life. They don't have to get undressed, or move around the couch - they just have to be. Often quite an unusual experience for busy, stressed people.

By creating a calm, relaxed environment you will allow the healing to manifest in a way that is meaningful for them.

Hi, I just thought I would tell you he had his second treatment this afternoon and fell asleep half way through the first foot which was nice cos I went and put my feet up, made the dinner and then came back.......just joking! He said he has slept brilliantly since the treatment last week, his sinuses have been remarkably clearer for first time in years, and headaches much less violent. wow! I am so happy for him, and hope that todays treatment helps a lot too. Its so nice to see someone "uncurl" and relax!!.

Hi Melsy

Magnesium oil can sometimes help,especially if there is contraction of the temporal artery. This can give a lot of pain indeed. Applying a bit of magnesium oil directly to the area, can help the arterial walls to relax, and widen the arterial lumen, and lower pressure within it.
