We were impressed with the intensity of this massage gun even on the low settings, so if you’re a first-timer, go gently the first few times out. We used this massage gun to relieve some upper back soreness and found it did the trick. When used after a spin class, it made for quicker muscle recovery in the glutes, quads, and hamstrings, too. Aside from dynamic stretching and exercises during your warmup, she recommends using a massage gun on your workout target areas for about 30 to 60 seconds to increase blood flow and mobility. Post-workout, you should do your cool-down stretches followed by using the massage gun on those same areas to mitigate sore, stiff muscles while increasing circulation and flexibility.
While there are many benefits to using a massage gun, Helfrich says there are a number of instances when you should avoid it:
- Do not use it on any body parts that have open wounds or are otherwise bruised or inflamed.
- Do not use it on areas that were the site of recent surgery without doctor approval.
- Do not use it on the spine or any other bony areas, like your knees, ankles, or elbow.
- There is conflicting public information on whether it’s okay to use a massage gun during pregnancy. Helfrich doesn’t advise it. “There is limited research on the effects of percussion therapy on [a] developing baby,” she explains.
Helfrich also says that if you experience any pain or discomfort while using a massage gun, stop using it immediately and consult your healthcare practitioner.
“The length of time you use your massage gun will vary depending on the intensity, size of the targeted area, and your tolerance level,” says Helfrich. She notes that in general, you shouldn’t use the massage gun for more than two or three minutes per area. “Using it for too long or applying too much pressure can cause bruising and soreness, so it is important to listen to your body and adjust intensity and duration accordingly,” she explains.
