The Qualifications question ......

Feeling a bit fed up today. I've been talking to someone today who needed a massage (for aches & pains) and was just about to say "I can do that!" () and she said she'd been going to someone local who I know for a fact is qualified only in a few beauty treatments.

Obviously I didn't say anything. I went to her a couple of times for nail/eyebrow work and remember seeing her qualifications were from beauty academies only. There's no way she would have studied A & P either.

I am beginning to wonder whether I wasted my money studying for the VTCT massage and then IHM separately. Course fees were around £650 and then uniform, books, travelling, insurance, PA membership etc.

What's the point when some people have no idea what qualifications to look for and if people with no proper training are getting all the work?
Sorry - exceptionally low today - have a rotten cold all weekend and this has just annoyed me.

I know just how you feel as there is a lady near me who isn't qualified either and I've had a few people telling me that holistic treatments are rubbish after going to her.

At least you know that when you give a treatment you are giving your client the very best you can offer and you really know what you are doing. I personally can't imagine offering treatments that i'm not qualified in.

I guess part of our job is to educate people into finding the right therapist. Encouraging people to ask about qualifications and insurance and also being aware of our own limitations and referring people on to other therapists when we're not sure if what our client needs is what we can offer.

I think we all have moments when we think 'what's the point!' I know I do!

Quite honestly I wouldn't worry about things, just do a good job when you are with clients and I am sure that will be a better advert than any qualifications, I know we have to have them these days and it is very frustrating when they cost a fortune but hey my local GP has a string of qualifications but I wouldn't trust him near my body with a barge pole

In those cases, you should turn it around. Your focus was on how poorly qualified this other person was giving a massage and, quite rightly, you didn't want to disrespect that other person or make yourself look back for saying anything about such lacking qualifications. However, you could very easily have just said that you would happily provide her with a treatment as you are fully qualified in X, Y and Z; thus making a point of your qualifications and subtly instilling in her the idea that she should consider the qualifications of the person she chooses. If she then still goes to this other person then that's her choice, but at least you've put yourself in a positive light without putting down someone else in the process.
