Therapies for pregnancy

I live in the Brighton, Sussex area and am four months pregnant. I wondered if anyone knew of a therapist offering various therapies and treatments specially for pregnant women. It seems a lot of therapists do not want to work on pregnant women and that many therapys are not suitable when pregnant.
Does anyone know where i can find out more information on specialising in alternative therapies for pregnancy?
Any help or advice gratefully received. Many thanks!

Hello Deelite, and congratulations! I can only really speak for my own therapy which is reflexology. If you go to www.aor.org.uk this is the website of the Association of Reflexologists and you will be able to do a search on reflexologists in your area. Many of us do treat pregnant ladies and reflexology can be a great help with pregnancy issues such as constipation or backache. I have also given reiki to my sister during her pregnancy. I have heard of people receiving massage, aromatherapy, shiatsu, cranio sacral osteopathy and chiropractic in pregnancy to name but a few. Even if you have no specific health issues it's still lovely to have a relaxing treatment of your choice. Good luck with your search.

I love giving Reiki to pregnant ladies, unfortunately I don't live in your area but I'm sure you could find a Reiki practitioner in your area only too willing to treat you. Good luck with your search and congratulations on your pregnancy.

Hello Deelite, welcome to Healthy Pages and congratulations on your pregnancy. I'm not in Brighton so can't personally help you but I'm a reflexologist with a particular interest in maternity care. Reflexology is perfectly safe in pregnancy and has loads of benefits. There is research which suggests that women who have regular reflexology throughout there pregnancy have a significantly shorter labour. It's very good for those common complaints such as heart burn, back ache, morning sickness etc.

Many reflexologists will only treat after the first trimester but that should be no problem as you're in your 4th month.

I just obviously have not spoken to the right practioners as they said no massage or reflexology or aromatherapy when I mentioned I was pregnant - but obviously not completely the case, and the 'expectancy' website looks extremely helpful.

Pregnancy is only a problem with massage if you are having problems carrying, during a normal pregnancy massage is a very positive thing to receive right through the full pregnancy.

i am trained in maternity reflexology but unfortunately not in brighton... more's the pity, one of my fave places!

before i had my training i was worried about treating pregnant clients as we are kinda scared off during learning. if a therapist doesnt feel comfortable giving treatments, then they wont.

you could try calling the raworth college in dorking Telephone: 01306 742150. i did my training there under susanne enzer, a leading light in this field, so they may have listings of those that attended the course and practise.

otherwise, look in your local YP. simply ask therapists, a) if they are trained or b) do they feel happy and confident about treating. belonging to a governing body is neither here nor there in my opinion but all should be insured.

Reflexology and Massage are just wonderful in pregnancy but make sure your practitioner is well qualified.
I tend to avoid aromatherapy in pregnancy, not sure why its just my choice....sorry i cant help either i am in Berkshire.

An idea would be to locate a college near you that runs massage in pregnancy courses and you could go along for a freebie, or ask the college to pass you on to someone local who has completed the course....

I am trained in pre and post natal massage - but once again am not in your area. I would suggest you look at www.wellmother.org - I know Suzanne keeps a list of all therapist that have trained with her and she may be able to help you find someone in your area.

At a certain point it is no longer classified as post natal massage, however the massage that occurs throughout the birthing process and in the following weeks uses adaptations and different techniques. The six week clearance is a bit of a myth in my opinion. In many countries, mothers are back working in the fields in a matter of days unless they have experienced complications and giving birth is not like a recovery from a disease / illness. Its a natural thing and massage presents no problems in the majority of cases. C sections require a different approach again, and any treatment undertaken at that point would be dependant on a number of factors such as whether they were regular receivers of massage.

I am not too far away - I work in Chichester at a chiropractors; if you fancy a drive out one day i would be more than happy to massage a pregnant lady!!

I am also looking to take the course in massage for pregnancy - just as soon as I can find the time and the money
