Nowadays life is all about managing your subscriptions; your Netflix account, your gym membership, your Marley Spoon weekly order and your monthly Beauty Box - now there is a new subscription on the scene and it's a must for your wellbeing.
Say hello to Massage Envy a subscription massage service that will make sure you're top-to-toe relaxed every single month. The best bit it makes your regular chill session so much more affordable. Yep, you can get massages from just $40 for 30 minutes.
With over 200 locations in the US, the no-fuss chain has hit Aussie shores and there is bound to be one heading to a suburb near you soon.
How it works is that you sign up for a yearly or half-yearly package which includes one service - either a massage, facial or stretch session - each month at any location. Then any extra services within that month you pay at a discounted price.
And if you don't use your massage one month, any unused session rolls over to the next. They also take walk-ins.
โItโs all about total body care. There are so many benefits of massage,โ explains general manager Mike Manley. โFrom the muscle tension to overall relaxation for your health and wellbeing that are often caused by the the daily stresses of life.โ
I headed to the Sydney CBD location to trial a massage (tough gig I know), and itโs amazing just how relaxing the place is. Itโs located on Pitt St which is packed with foot traffic and bustling professionals, but once you walk down the stairs you can actually breathe and feel like youโre escaped the outside world.
Manley says this is the reason why lunchtime is their busiest โ the place is a haven within the city for people to simply escape.
โWe get so many business people in the CBD who come in on their lunch break. Itโs so great for them to just relax for an hour. A lot of people do go to the gym on their lunchbreak but then on Fridays they come to us to end the week to mix it up.โ
The massages on offer are relaxation, remedial and deep tissue. I ask my therapist to work on my shoulders and neck (classic office-job problems) and my lower back (which is now sore thanks to an ever growing 11 month old). The treatment was extremely personalised and I felt I was in great hands.
If massages arenโt your MO, they also offer facials that use Medik8 skincare a treat everything from anti-ageing and pigmentation to blemishes and breakouts.
This year the chain has also added assisted stretching to the menu.
โOur main goal is to stretch you out through assists,โ explains my therapist when I ask what the session entails. โHow it defers from normal stretching is that sometimes you just canโt reach certain areas. You arenโt relaxed and you are forcing yourself to get there. So what we do is help you reach a deeper stress in a more relaxed state.โ
He recommended the stretch session to people who are physically active or who have heavy labour jobs. I see it as a nice addition to complement those who love to go super hard at the gym.
โStretching is so underestimated and people donโt think itโs that useful and they usually donโt stretch out long enough and hard enough.โ
Massage envy can be found in Sydney CBD, Balmain and Lane Cove.
Wellness programs start at $89 per month for a 12-month program and $109 per month on a 6-month program. An introductory 30-minute massage or facial session is available for $40.
Health fund rebate is also available.
This is why pain from a back massage or a stretch often feels good. Plus one writer on the 10 thoughts sheโs had while getting a massage.
