we want to get a new cat/kitten but we dont have an isolation room.how can we

introduce them without them kill? we have a lovely 9yr old male cat who is spoilt and soft as anything.but we dont have an isolation room to put a new cat/kitten in and dont no how to introduce them to each other without them killing each other.leo used to get on realy well with our 2yr old tabby (poppy) but she past away 4yr ago and leo has been on his own ever since.i would love a new member to our family but want to do it as calmly as possible.we no about the scent on a rag or sock etc,its just the isolation room that we dont have that is a concern.can anyone please help before we go getting our new baby,thanks
thank you for your replys.looks like a new member will be coming to our home soon as i shall now be going to our local rspca,which is where we got leo.i think a female may be better,preferably a kitten or up to a yr old as another male may fight more.thank you anyway for all your replies

I didn't have an isolation room either when i introduced my cat to my other cat. I kept him in the cat carrier while the other sniffed him. They tried to fight each other while in the carrier... so i just let them go at it. They fought for 2 days straight... no major injuries and now are inseparable.

I agree, just use the bathroom if you have a door that closes on it, it is what i did. just set up everything the new cat needs in there -- food and water dishes, something soft to sleep on, a sturdy scratching post with rough material, some toys. etc. You have to be careful going in and out. but it can work.

Use the bathroom as an isolation room. I tried using the kitty carrier to separate and introduce once but it only made things worse... they were extra intense about the presence of each other and when finally introduce they tried to kill each other. They never got along and I had to eventually find a new home for the kitten after 3 years of trying.

When we get a new cat or kitten (we foster quite a lot) we hold the new one and let the other 2 smell them. There is a lot of growling and hissing then and after we let the new one go. We don't use a isolation room we just put the new one in the bedroom and let them have the room of the house when they feel comfortable to come out and the other cats can go check them out when they want. There will be fights, growling and hissing at first and even later on but that is just the older cats letting the new ones know that they are the dominate ones.

Agree, a bathroom or your bedroom will work perfectly as an isolation room. Or even a laundry room. It doesn't need to be big since it will be temporary. Good luck!

If you have a bathroom with a door that closes, you have an "isolation" room.

Barring that, the only other thing is to get a very large dog kennel/crate where the kitten can be kept with room for a litter pan, food, and water dishes.

It would be more open but would protect both the cat and kitten from hurting each other.

I have a 13 yr old cat and 3 yrs ago when we introduced leia into the mix, he hated it at first but then started to love her. you dont need an isolation room. its all just a matter of how well the first cat gets along with others
