Weeds and lawn question from newbie?

Okay I bought a house - the previous owners stopped maintaining the front lawn a long time ago. It's full of weeds in fact, it's mostly weeds. There are some patches of lawn growing now because of the rain but it's mostly weeds (and some patches of nothing but dirt).

I want to grow a new lawn but how do I get rid of the weeds? I'm a complete newbie at lawn maintenance. How do I get rid of the weeds and then what should I do to reseed the lawn and make sure those weeds don't regrow? Thanks for any assistance (just looking for experienced answers, not guesses - I can guess myself).

This is how I did my yard, I used a shovel and cleaned all the weeds off the top layer about 1and1/2 inch then used my tiller and cut down about 6-8 inch and when i found a weed root dig it out and all roots you find put in a bag to throw a way I tilled my yard two or three times after you are sure you have all of the weed roots put down some good top soil and rake and smooth out all rock and lumps you should go to your garden store and ask for the best grass seed for your zone and get some 10-10-10 fertilizer work it in to your soil you should do this as you put down your top soil you will need some straw to cover the seeds and keep moist you should have a good yard good luck

Henry has a good plan but it's a lot of work. Depending how big the yard is it could cost a couple of thousand dollars or about 3 days of hard hard work with you and a couple of friends.

An easier solution is to use a seed that will out compete all the other plants in the lawn area and do most of the hard work for you. Many people have a thing for grass. It's an obsession. But clover can be used just like lawn grasses.

It's soft to the feet

It self fertilizes for fast vigorous growth. Anyone who has tried to get rid of clover can tell you this. Clover is a legume and will use nitrogen from the air. This allows it to out grow most everything else.

It stays green without fake fertilizers.

Best of all is the way it grows keeps other weeds out because the broad leaves shade the ground and keep seeds from growing. The clover has runners or stems along the ground that root and allow the clover to spread and choke out the other plants.

They can do it for less than you can buy the products for, have free service calls, and most importantly, know exactly what to do.
Give them 24 months and you will have a beautiful lawn.
