What camera would you suggest for a newbie?

Let me add that I have never owned a digital camera. Snapped maybe 2 pictures. Please also include things like specific type of memory Card and any cords I'd need. I have HP v2007 computer (Vista I got in Dec 08).. I am willing to pay up to $250-300 for the camera. it is to be used only to take personal pics - like family and events at work for my keeping. y niece had a Canon and it seemed easy to use. I'd like clear pics and any other easy helpful features that I could learn to use..or might appreciate . Thanks
